Newbie here. Ill try to keep this brief. Im purchising my first handgun and as the title states, its between the M&P9 or SD9VE. Please dont suggest other options for me. Ive shot a G17, XD9, M&P9 and SD9VE and I've made MY decision with M&P/SD9VE. Both feel great so really its down to the price and trigger. I know the 9ve trigger can be "improved" with the APEX spring kit for about $25. So here's my question. Is the M&P($530) better than the SD9VE($400 w/APEX kit)? Is it really worth the extra $130? Saving the extra money is no problem for me as I believe with a purchase such as this its worth it to save a little extra for better quality/reliability. I know the M&P has made a name for itself in reliability but im just not sure about the SD9VE. Any help or thoughts would be much appreciated.

Others will state get what feels best in your hand, what you shoot best etc... Since you have shot both, you evidently are comfortable with both. IMHO, yes the M&P is worth the extra $130.

Ok thanks. Like i said, the M&P felt a little better to shoot(because of the trigger) and accuracy is a little hard for me to judge because I still need loads more range time as it is. Any particular reason why you'd choose the MP?

I'll tell you why I chose the SD.

The SD is a very simple design, extremely ergonomic and accurate. It does have a long trigger but once you get the hang of it, it's really nice and easy to shoot, and it's inexpensive. The SD being a descendant of the Sigma and priced as an entry level gun, keeps the price down, but has no effect on the reliability of the gun.

With the M&P you are paying money for the R&D, the extra backstraps and marketing costs. If you like better, by all means get it, but I doubt you're getting more reliablility. You are getting a gun that is priced and marketed to go head to head with a Glock and that "is" built into the price point.

I think both are teriffic. You will get more respect owning an M&P, but you do pay for it.

I shot the Sigma for a few years and laughed every time I heard some cowboy bash it on the internet. My SD is pretty new and I'll post if I ever have a problem with it, but please don't hold your breath. ;)

I'm stuck behind enemy lines in the People's Republic of Taxachusetts, so the SD9VE has some significant advantages for me. I can get pre-ban 17-round magazines that fit the SD9VE which I can't do for the newer M&P9. With the M&P9, I am stuck with 10-round magazines. Also, because of silly consumer protection laws here, I need Apex kits for both guns to achieve a decent trigger... so the net cost difference between the two guns is greater (about $180.00 + tax). That is not to be sneezed at.

Only thing I don't like is the two-tone treatment of the current SD9VE... but that's a personal thing. I'm just not a two-tone kind of guy.

In a free state where pre-ban magazines and obscene trigger pull requirements don't matter, I think most people will recommend the M&P9. For me personally, I happen to like both.

I have a 2006 M&P full size 9mm and a 2013 SD9VE. The M&P has the Apex RAM-USB-Hard Sear. The SD9VE has the Apex trigger & spring kit. The Apex refinements have made these better shooters in my hands. Very glad that I went that route.
Between the two, the M&P has the edge.

PS - If you get the SD9VE, don't do the spring kit only. You'll want to add the new trigger as well. With that being said, my M&P really came to life with just the RAM-USB-Hard Sear. I feel it doesn't need a new trigger.

i chose the SD series over the M&P series. i do have a M&P as my BUG but my main squeeze is my SD40. i like it more than the m&p and it feelslike it was made for my hand

I have the SD9ve & my wife has the M&P 9 compact. I shoot & like both. I like the trigger on the SD as a in my home self defense weapon. If I were going to carry as the wife does I would take the M&P. I wouldn't do anything to the SD9 at first give it a little time before you work on it. I find that I can shoot any other pistol better including the wife's MP after having learned to shoot my SD. I also got a 1911, don't know why I just did, but I can almost drive nails with it after having shot the SD.
I would sell the 1911 before I would the SD & if anything should happen to it I would buy another.
& Welcome , Let us know what you buy & how it works for you : )

I own a number of M&Ps (full size, compact, and Shield) in .45ACP, .40 S&W, and 9mm, and they are good guns IMO. I also have a SD9VE and a SD40VE, and they are good guns. The one and only thing that I don't like about the SDVE pistol and that I can't replace is the stamped metal slide release. BUT it works, and I've never read of a failure attributed to it, so it's not that big a deal to me.

You can't go wrong with either gun. You'll find more accessories for the M&P. The SDVE's ergonomics are like it was made just for me. The M&P with the small back strap fits me quite well too.

Around here, the SDVE sells for around $320, while the M&P sells for around $550...which is a significant price difference. It really comes down to your money and your choice...

Like stated previously, you can not go wrong with eihter. I have the M&P 45 and both the SD9VE & SD40VE. I really like shooting the SD pistols & doing the work on them much more. I can get a smooth trigger on the SD with just some polishing work (no changing of springs needed.) I have used Apex parts on this M&P as well as others I used to own & I agree that the hard sear is all that I really need (I can polish the rest). I do find I like to spend the extra on the SD when it comes to stainless steel guide rods. Thus, I still do spend less on fixing up an SD than I would an M&P. That being said, I really love shooting the SD pistols so much more. They fit in the had better, point better fot me, and are more comfortable to conceal. I would rather have my SD than my M&P if I had to give one up.

i feel the same. if op does get a SD we will be able to much insight into the cool mods that can be done.

I'm going with the sd9ve. Like I said I prefer the M&P trigger but the SDVE and my hand become one when I use it. It is my first gun after all and I'd like the extra $100+ to learn to properly use my gun. But I can confidently say the M&P compact will be mine by summers end. If I ever get my CPL. I live in Michigan and I have the unfortunate pleasure of living in one of like four counties that still has a ludicrous gun board in a shall issue state. But that's another rant for another day. Thanks for all the help everyone.

hahaha any chance its macomb county? i live there. took me forever to get in front of that stupid board, who had my CPL already printed they just wanted to meet me. thanks mark hackel... luckily we have legislation working to get rid of the gun boards. GO SEN. MIKE GREEN!!

plus with the extra $100 u can get a nice safariland ALS or blackhawk serpa and join the open carry revolution that is spanning across michigan! oh and still have some oney left for ammo :)

Macomb county indeed. What a joke. Everything is completed except to schedule my appearance before the gun board. I call to check the status and all I get is "well you were told it could take up to 4-5 months" the kind of incompetence shown by them is astounding.

which is BS. its supposed to be 90 days max. there is some law. we were discussing it on the michigan OC forumif interested i can pm you a link to it. dont want to advertise on here

My first handgun was and SD9VE. Right away in installed the Apex trigger kit. I used it to qualify for my CCW test. I loved this gun but just kept thinking the MP would be sweeter.
After owning the SD for about 6 months and 650 or so rounds down range I traded it for the M&P 9.
I love the M&P I really enjoy shooting it. Have about 1300 rounds through it and it has never misfired or failed in any way.

All that being said I sure miss the SD9VE it was a great gun. I wish I never traded it.

Bet that makes the decision clear as mud :)

View attachment 150551 I own both and love them both. You can't go wrong with either. For me the trigger pull is the difference my accuracy is a little better with the M&P but that has a lot to do with the trigger. Mine are both stock and I plan on keeping it that way. Do your self a favor and get both and that will end the controversy but you will enjoy both. My first S&W was a SD9 but I fell in love with the M&P the first time I held it.

SD9VE
M&P 9F
