I was hoping someone more educated could help: Questions in bold

I just had my local gunsmith install a Troy Alpha Rail on my M&P10 (pictures below). The top rails do not line up. When I mentioned this to the gunsmith he said that was normal. Is this correct? I would think for a home install maybe, but expensive gun dealer to not make it perfect???

This is going to get a custom paint job so I am considering changing the hand guard to something round and less vented to make more canvas space and also completely eliminate the worry of a top rail lining up. This is being used primarily as a precision/long range firearm (sniping hogs with a suppressor at range) and not rapid fired. Is non-vented ok? Or should I at least get something slightly vented?

Here are links to examples of what I want:

Non-vented

Vented

While I won't have rails, I do not want them. A quad rail is too much for a distance rifle and there is no rail that only has a lower rail. In fact there is no rail I can find that has a native dual rail (top and bottom only) and round sides. I will drill a custom hole for a bi-pod and be done. The benefit in trade would be simple break down (some of the rounds simply unscrew as there are no rails to align), good uninterrupted canvas space for the custom camo job and a lightweight frame free of rails.

Also I am guessing this is normal but on the bottom of the rail (more pics below) the two parts are so tight they are bent together. Is this level of tightness necessary? I would think stretching that much would weaken the metal there.

In regards to the upper part of the rail, mine is the same way... Daniel Defense 7.62 Lite Rail 9.0 MID

I believe the rail needs to be a low profile DPMS type and then change the gas block, if you go to rifle length.

I personally do not mind it. I have a Leupold 3X9 patrol and the scope tube is over the step up and I am using 45 degree offset iron sights. The quad rail is a mid length and I have the front sight on the stock clamp gas block with the rear on the factory upper behind the scope.. No problems with this set up..

Not normal. He installed the high profile rail. The same handguard in the low profile version will line up with the receiver.

That looks about right for the clamp screws. The biggest worry is making them so tight the steel anchors pull through the aluminum.

Regards

I'm using the low profile DPMS version of the Troy TRX-308 and there is a small step but much smaller than pictured. The step is in the other direction.

Is the Alpha one of the approved rails in the S&W parts handbook?

My guess is that your gunsmith installed the wrong version of the handguard.

Thanks to everyone for the replies. I had a hunch. How about my questions related to the vented/nonvented new rail? Any thoughts?

Either handguard looks like it will do what you want. Vented verses non-vented would be a personal preference.

Try an apex handguard. This is a 15 inch version on my gun. Free floating, round, top rail matches perfectly, and can add rails wherever you want.

I may be wrong but I understand that the Troy trx DELTA handguard is for the .308 and the ALPHA is meant for the 5.56.
Also the above advice about using a low profile rail is what I've been told. I hope all this is correct because that is what I'm waiting for to arrive.

I am using the Troy 13.8  TRX 308 Extreme DPMS LP - BLK (STRX-E3D-13BT-00) with a Troy  .750 LP Gas Block.
