So I just bought a M&P15OR (Optics Ready) and I am planning on getting this gun all set up. looking for some quad rails. Im read Troy its a very good choice. I dont know whats the difference between a floating rail and a drop in. So any good recommendations out there?

Welcome and congrats on the OR. Many will suggest you go shoot the rifle before you decide on any hand guard improvements or quad rail adds. It depends on what you will use the rifle for on how to answer your question about drop in/free float rails.

A drop in rail is just that. Pull back on your delta ring, take the stock hand rail off, put a new 2 piece hand guard in, release the delta ring and you are done. Drop in rails are easy to change but are limited to what they can do and how they effect accuracy at greater distances. A free float is much harder to install but will provide more options and provide greater accuracy for longer distance shooting. Why? Because the hand guard does not contact the barrel and is mounted directly to the upper. This provides no contact with the barrel itself with your hand, bench rest, etc. while shooting, thus theoretically making it more consistently accurate. That's the main difference.

If you really want a quad rail now, buy a decent drop in that won't break the bank. That way if you ever want to upgrade to a free float, you can at a later date. The front site block on the OR is not low profile enough (i believe) to allow a free float hand guard to slide on, so if you ever want to upgrade you will need to change a few things.

Good luck, get out and shoot that baby.

I installed the KNIGHT'S ARMAMENT QUAD RAIL 2-piece drop in kit. Awesome quality and looks great. Check them out.

I have the same thing on my Sport. Solid as a rock, but a little pricey. I got mine used so it was much cheaper. Great rail though.

Thank you guys for those tips! Im planning on going to the range this weekend and hell yeah I bought a few rounds around 700. I will place a benchmark to know what improvements I would like in the gun.

Thank you again!

Thank you for the recommendation, I will go and fire that thing this weekend!
