Dept. issue weapon is the full size M&P40. Went to qualify this past week. I have always shot high 90% each yearly qual. The shots from this weapon were all very low. Shooting Speer 180 grain Gold Dots. At 25 yards at a Q target my shots were off the paper low. That would be about 12-18 inches low. Is this a know issue with this pistol? Do I need a higher rear sight? I do not have a lot of confidence in this weapon as it is right now and I have to carry it on duty.

Trigger work as you are obviously an experienced shooter. Most people new to M&P 's shoot low left. I put over 1200 rounds through mine and got better then went the Apex route and am much happier now. Google Apex Tactical or Burwell trigger job. Good luck!

This is a duty weapon so we cannot alter them as I would any other gun.

GlenS:

I have a M&P 40C and it shot POI/POA with all ammo with the stock factory fixed, 3-dot sights (no night sights). I replaced these factory sights with Truglo TFOs without any change in POI/POA. I have only a few hundred rounds out of the tube, and mine is the compact model, which may not be the case with you. Can you have the sights changed? Maybe you need a higher front sight? Have you checked the backstrap for fit? I'm wondering if you need to switch backstraps...maybe the one currently on the pistol is causing you to (slightly) depress the barrel, which results in your low hits.

Best of luck,

Dave

While it's certainly possible that the sights are off, it would be unlikely. The most common trouble with the M&P is trigger control.

A stock M&P can have a trigger pull anywhere from 6-8lbs. It's quite heavy for a single action gun. It can take some practice to fix it.

Are you able to take this gun home? If you are, the problem can be fixed at home with dry practice. Unload the gun. Point at a spot on the wall. The best way to do this is to be only an inch or so from the spot. Press the trigger and watch to see how much movement the gun does in relation to the spot.

The goal is no movement when you press the trigger. It may take some time to develop the right trigger control. I guarantee this will help.

When my son was at the academy he was issued a brand new M&P 40 & after putting over 3000 rounds of Blazer through it he loves it. Bear in mind that he has my Glock 23 & 21 that I gave him. He felt the M&P was a tad better trigger-wise. I heard that S&W made a change in M&Ps manufactured in '13. The range instructor had him experiment with the back straps & he found he was the most accurate with the large one even though his hands are average size.

The Milwaukee PD issues their guns with Trijicon night sights. That might be the difference.
