Since it already comes with the thumb safety , is there any one else that would like to see an extend thumb safety offered ?

Are you finding it difficult or tight to disengage. I have read some people saying this and are leaving the safety off.

Thought about that. It's very a "positive" on/off and will stay where you set it. An extended thumb safety would hinder that safety feature (not that I don't think it could/should be an add on feature). But I actually like it the way it is,tight to the frame, shouldn't snag on anything with a VERY positive "hard" set on/off safety. The way it is,I can holster it with the safety off and it functions like my FS M&P's with no thumb safeties. Safety on (as hard as it sets on/off and tight to the slide), if I stuff it in a pocket, back pack, tackle box or the wife's purse. I know the safety is "stiff" enough to not just pop off or on willey-nilley.

No worries,I don't take anything for granted. NOTHING is completely safe when the human factor is involved. **** happens.

I woud like to see a bit larger of a safety offered. I carry mine with the safety engaged and have found if my hands are wet or sweaty, it takes a couple swipes to deactivate it. It doesn't need anything as big as the full size M&P thumb safety, but somethng that protrudes slightly away from the frame so it keeps its slim profile.

I revived this thread since getting a response from S&W about an extended thumb safety for the Shield. All I got back was "They don't want to alter any of the features on a Shield."

So that brings us to aftermarket options only. What company would go ahead with such a project? The thumb safeties themselves are just bent sheet metal, so I don't think it would be too difficult for a company already set-up with a shop and machines to easily do such a process.

I agree. Having "grown up" on the 1911 the frame mounted safety is second nature but I'd like to have a bit more purchase for my thumb.

Surely, someone will step up.

I, for one, think that the Shield is a perfect weapon in every way. Completely satisfied with mine and wouldn't want the safety changed. I do like the positive on-off of the safety and with it slightly recessed, it doesn't hinder any type of concealed carry. I do like the way that the Shield fits perfectly in a rear pocket of a pair of jeans. Smith & Wesson has a winner with this firearm in my opinion. The wife and I bought our daughter one for personal protection and we each own and carry one. Outstanding job with this one, S&W!

I'd like a slightly larger safety lever.

I am on board with leaving it as is. I am a lefty as well, and do not engage the safety. It is solid if I need it, and with much practice, I can easily disengage it. I knew when I bought it, that it was not large or ambidextrious.

Just my .02 worth.

The Shield thumb safety

The trouble with most nowadays is if they can't solve their problem on their iphone or computer they just keep talking about it on a forum. I learned at a very early age to do things for myself and that was in the age of telephones and no computers that were available to the public. A set of small files and some epoxy or fiberglass is readily available and just take your thumb safety out of the gun and do it yourself. If you can't figure out what to do to it then you should leave it alone. If you do see what you want it to be then just mix up some epoxy or fiberglass and daub a little glob of it on the safety lever. In a few mins it will start to harden and then you can mold it to suit . Then after it completely sets up don't rush it. Overnight is not too long to wait. Get your small toolmakers files out and shape it like you want it. If you don't know how you want it then you are already in over your head. You need to be sure that you don't make it bigger than the little square recess in the frame but you can make a rounded safety that protrudes about 1/8 of an inch. Round all corners down or shape to suit yourself. Then polish it down with some cheap emery boards from Walmart or the Dollar store. I really don't care if anyone agrees with what I have said here or not. If you want to change something then do it. If you don't think you can then don't mess with it. As for me if I don't like the way a gun is made I make it over or fix it to suit myself.
