New to the forum, hope someone can help...

My M&P 9 has an atriculated trigger as all the M&P's do, mine is free floating, should there be a spring in the trigger so that the trigger wedge is exposed to prevent AD's (accidental discharge). I have see other M&P 9's & .40's with a spring loaded trigger. Is this a manufacter part miss in the production of my pistol or is it normal for the M&P. I have owned my M&P for about a year now and have had no problems with AD's but with my daughter starting to shoot soon, well you get where I going with this. If anyone can enlighten me I would appreciate some help.

Im having a hard time visualizing this, but the only spring on the trigger is the trigger return spring. Are you talking about the hinged trigger design? If that is the case you should not be able to pull from the top half of the trigger and engage the striker, but if you pull from the bottom half the striker engages. If this is how your trigger works that's how it's supposed to work.

Yes the lower part of the hinged trigger has no tension, it free floats back and fourth. Yes if I were to put preasure on the upper part of the trigger depending where the lower part of the trigger was positioned it would fire.

The trigger has been that way since I got it, I never knew any differance until I picked up a M&P 40 just the other day.

Well found the problem, took the lower part of the trigger off by removing the pin in the center of the trigger. Being all plastic, there is a flat plastic spring like extension that is supposed to keep the lower part of the trigger forward. CHEEP, CHEEP, CHEEP...whether or not it was like that when I purchased the pistol or after 2000+ rounds the piece of plastic retained memory and flattened out against its self. If you are having this problem call S&W and inform them as I think this may constitute a safety problem. I like the trigger but the safety of my daughter who is learning to shoot takes precedence, time for an aftermarket trigger.

I just put the new poly trigger from APEX on my M&P and it's a world of difference. This trigger should be put on whether the stock trigger is broken or not.

Ordering the trigger right now as I am not taking a chance with the stock trigger.

Check out the exploded view here http://img5.imageshack.us/img5/6453/mpexploded.png and look closely at the lower trigger part. There is a tab that appears to act as a spring to return the lower trigger forward. Smith & Wesson might send you a new trigger assembly on request... or they will send you the label to return it to them for repair. It should only cost you time.

That is exactly the problem I'm having, the little spring like tab looks cracked at the joint where it comes out of the lower trigger part and laid flat again on the first pull of the trigger. A call to S&W is in order on Monday morning.

I would return it to S&W for repair. Then you could order the apex trigger and have the stock trigger as a back up.:)

I have also done some history look back / lessons learned on my firearm storage. I have a tendancy to over secure my firearms within my safe. By this I mean that I store my firearms with trigger locks on the guns, while this is not manditory in Canadian law for storage of my firearms I have always taken safety and security of my guns to the next level especially with kids in the house.

I have come to the conclusion that I may have put undue preassure on the trigger and this in it's self made the plastic in the trigger retain memory that made the lower part of the trigger move freely. Either way I will contact S&W and have them send me a lower trigger part.

I would send it back to SW and let them give you a new trigger even if you want to get the Apex one. SW will check out the entire gun! What else is wrong with the gun that you don't know about...? And let them know your confidence in SW is shaken...
