M&P9c and TFX sights, does this look right?

I had these TFX sights installed by a gunsmith, pointed out the gap and he said that is how it is supposed to be. If you can't see in picture, there is a gap between the sight and slide, as well as under the dovetail section. Had the same sights on my Shield before I sold it and it did not have the gap. For what I paid to have them swapped I could have bought a good sight pusher. Thoughts? Thank you.

He filed off too much off the bottom of the sight to be able to slide it into the dovetail easier. When the set screw was tightened it tipped the sight and caused to gap within the dovetail. Definitely a bungled job if you asked me. I've installed TFX sights myself on my Shield and XDm Compact and neither has the gap within the dovetail.

Every sight I've ever seen had some kind of gap between the sight and the top of the slide. Otherwise the slide would get scratched when the sight was drifted on or off.

Thank you. He said he didn't have to file anything off the sight. He broke the first one installing it and TruGlo sent him a new one to replace it, he said it went in easier than expected. There is no set screw on front sight that I can see. Time to buy my own sight pusher, any recommendations?

I have a sight pusher but I find myself favoring my simple $30 benctop vise. Brass punch and a stubby hammer g2g.

I took it off and put it back on myself with a vice and tape covered punch, same fit. Was so easy I'm pissed I spent $80 having the sights swapped from my Shield. I'll wait to hear from TruGlo. There are wear marks on the bottom of the sight like they are rubbing against something but it just doesn't look right

Yeah, that's wrong. Any gun smith that says what he said is just trying to cover his own mistake. He broke the first sight. That should be a clue to his ability. Alas, there are many out there who say they are gun smiths who are not.

I have one of these: SEMI-AUTO SIGHT MOVER | Brownells I like it a lot, but it ain't cheap. Mine is supposed to work with both the regular M&P and the Shield, but I haven't had an occasion to try it on the Shield yet.

Thank you. Any idea what I may have done wrong? I tapped it out, fit it in by hand and tapped it back, not as high as when "gunsmith" did it but still has the gap under. I really like these TFX's and they fit right on the Shield before I sold it.

Look closely at the sight and slot in the slide. Does it look like any material was removed from the slot in the slide?

The proper way to install a sight is by removing material off the sight. File down the bottom of the sight until it fits a little less than half way in the slot by hand. Then press it in the rest of the way.

It looks to me like he took too much off the sight and then tried to wedge something under it.

You are correct, I was thinking about the rear sight. It still doesn't look acceptable to me.

I used a Mark Iv pusher made by epj for my Shield sights:

I used an XL sight pusher from Fisher Solutions for my XDm Compact and VP9:

I think Rastoff is right....probably filed too much off bottom and shimmed it to correct error. I just installed the TFX on a Ruger LC9 [with a high quality sight pusher] and it is flush with the slide. I hope he didn't file the slide itself. I had a gunsmith ruin a Ruger single six installing sights. Ended up selling the gun at quite a discount. Good luck with a fix.

Thanks guys, TruGlo offered to take the slide in and fix it however they could, worth the $5.95 "if it fits it ships" box. Nothing was under the sight that I can see, but I can tell you after him breaking the first front sight and this job on the second, I won't be going back there again.

In addition to not going back, you should also demand your money back.

I can understand if you don't want to name your dishonest "gunsmith", but please tell me what city he's in so I don't have to worry if I need any work done.

Thanks.

I'm in Connecticut. Update, TruGlo just called me, they tried 3 different front sights and they all fit the same, they determined it is the slide, possibly an old production with a deeper cut in that run. I did buy this used but it had stock sight on it that looked fine. But TruGlo did this for free, put green locktite under to fill gap and check sight picture and alignment, and went as far as to replace the rear sight screw that the "gunsmith" stripped as well. Thumbs up to TrueGlo.

Truglo TFX HD on Shield--no gap

Glad TruGlo came through for you--after reading this topic, I went back and examined my installation of the same sights.

FYI--there was NO slide gap below the front sight (my Shield was manufactured in June 2015). Thought I'd include a couple of pics for anybody who was interested in your front sight issue.
I was going to do the installation myself, but instead had a S&W-certified gunsmith (a real wizard) do it for free along with a trigger job.

I had the exact sights on my Shield before selling it and they were perfect, but this 9c is definitely an older production run. Looking to buy another Shield in 9mm, may just swap these over and find something different for the 9c.
