A version of the .38 Airweight (after 1957, also called the model 12) was used by the USAF and designated the M13. As far as I have read or studied it was never used by USN or USMC aviators.
However, the same basic gun was used by pilots in the Royal Swedish Air Force. A photo that I saw of the holster was very like the USAF version.
I don't know what ammunition the Swedes issued in .38 Special. Their guns may have had steel cylinders.
The USAF ones had light alloy cylinders. They weren't safe and the guns were withdrawn and scrapped.
The issued ammunition was quite weak by .38 Special standards.
