M27-2 Factory Refinish & Action Job

Well folks,

I can't find my receipt anywhere. Just the invoice which didn't have a price. I asked for the finish it would have had leaving the factory originally if that helps narrow things down. I'd pull up my statement from when I paid, but that won't help either as I paid for the work on both guns at the same time. Sorry I can't provide a price.

I remember I never got a quote in the mail with 2020 being 2020. I paid over the phone when I called to check on them one day. So that possible solution never came to fruition either.

But I took it out to look at it, while looking for a receipt. And it made me smile...so yeah I'm a happy customer! The action is wonderful & the cylinder locks up nice & tight too.

This one came back to me in November, but I hadn't gotten around to taking photos until today.

To recap, it had finish issues (not terrible, but not what I wanted in a 5" M27) and a real bubba action job. There was a hitch in the action that I always hated. It also had some modern laminate stocks on it when I found it also. It went back to S&W wearing the correct but not original M27-3 magna's.

Now it's so nice, I'm not sure I can bring myself to shoot it. The action is exactly what I expected. Fantastic on both double & single action. I've sent three other guns back for the Master Action package & was extremely happy with the work.

So here are some photos finally. To me, the finish is perfect. I put some grashorn elk on it when it came back.

I'll add more photos in a second post.

What a great redo. Did S&W do this? I'm new to the game. BTW, those ELK(?) stocks really step it up.

S&W did the work. I'm very happy with the results. The finish when I bought it had a lot of scratches, some freckling (that I'm convinced would have only gotten worse) & loss of blueing in some areas. It wasn't a basket case, but not a real looker either.

Just a shot of what it looked like when i brought it home initially. I can't stress enough how bubba the action was.

It's companion in the photo is a Model 19 no dash 4"

In my observations, the much maligned current factory blue refinishes are more black than the blue-black of the older processes, but if the underlying polish job and metal work are good the guns turn out really nice, as this one did. Enjoy!

The old carbonia blue was much prettier than the current black oxide finish. I've blued a lot of guns in my smithing career and black oxide is funny stuff. The final color you get is greatly dependent on the type of polish that is done on the gun before it's thrown in the bluing tank. The higher the polish, the blacker it looks. I still do a little bluing, mostly on personal projects, and I rarely put a gun on a buffing wheel anymore. I use paper (sand) and oil down to 600 or sometimes 800 grit and do a final blending with gray Scotch brite. The guns come out of the tank looking more blue than black and resemble a rust blue found on most of the older guns. Blue steel and walnut still make me tingle.

Two weeks ago I called S&W to see if they would fix the slightly bent ejector rod on my 18-3.
They would do the work. but said it would take about 6 months, so they are still backlogged.
That's too bad, it's getting hard to find a good revolversmith anymore.

I've been meaning to call them about sending two more back for action work. The backlog doesn't bother me as the guns just sit around doing nothing.

I have a third gun, that I want to do a refinish plus action job on, but I'd rather do the two with just action jobs first.

Did you have Finish Work done to it too or just the action job?
I saw you still had a turn line on the cylinder and when I sent my 28-2 back to S&W to get it reblued and some internal work done to it...it came back with the turn line untouched. They reblued everything but the cylinder.

There was a bunch of other issues too which guarantees I'm not sending Smiths back to the Mother Ship for any reason moving forward but I can't believe they did this to other people too.
