Long story short, I purchased my first M27 several years ago from the original owner. Just had to have a 27 6". It came with the wood presentation box with papers and tools, including original sales receipt. It has taken me this long to realize it's a bit different than other 27's, it has a Patridge front sight with a red insert. Was this an option or would it be a custom insert by a gunsmith? If custom, it is very well done and the pin looks unaltered. I might be able to contact the original owner for info. Always learning something new about these Smith revolvers.:)

While Patridge sights with red inserts were definitely available, that one is definitely after-market.

As you pointed out about the sight pin, this is almost certainly the original blade modified on the gun.

Absolutly the insert was added to the factory sight after the revolver left the factory

If you look at my 6 1/2" 27, it has a factory original red insert Patridge. As you can see, it is not truly an insert. The red plastic sits outside of the blade.

Sorry that this is a old group photo. I can probably rephotograph that revolver by itself tomorrow
