M29-2 Did I do good?

These days I don't buy a gun unless it's in nice shape, at $700 I would have passed.

As I have said before, knows the cost of everything, the value of nothing.

Did you notice right away we have guys talking about a blue job? All I can say is we must have a bunch of independently wealthy members looking for tax write offs. I wish I had a couple dozen guys that deal like that. It would be better than a 401K.

I read your post 24 hours ago and the sight of that poor organ donor model 29 still disturbs me. All I can say is I am glad it found a caring home. Whoever owned it before certainly didn't do it any favors.

What a pity. That was once an absolutely beautiful, nickel plated Model 29. The finish does look rusty and possibly pitted, the front sight insert missing, no rear sight, and incorrect stocks. I don't think I would have paid $700, even though today any N-frame revolver commands a premium. To me, that is a $500, not more than $600 basis for a project. As for refinishing, no need to contact S&W for a nickel refinish as they no longer offer such. If the metal is pitted, then it will probably look best with a bead blasted surface and hard chrome plating. Hard chrome provides the best corrosion resistance, hands down.

I think I could have rectified the sticky action and sight issues for cheap and improved the original finish enough to make it look presentable. No refinishing required. Then it'd be ready to do an honest day's labor.

They don't all have to look like safe queens.

The sticky action probably just needs a good soaking. As for grips, I bought these two sets at a show a couple months ago for $75 for the pair. One is N frame, the other K. So shop around, don't buy "cokes" the rear sight might cost more than you like, a couple out there right now for $149. Some guys have made their own ramp inserts, google it and you might get some ideas. Before you fix the finish you'll be into it for close to $1000....not a great bargain, but you didn't lose the farm.

Just picked this up. Had been in storage (coal mine, I think) for over 30 years. Pitted, very dirty and gummed up, action not functioning due to crud, no rear sight. S/N indicates 1979 production.
$700
Your opinion?

Pop. l remember now why this 29 attracted my attention. Back in the 60s Robert Peterson(Guns&Ammo, HotRod, Motor Trend guy) killed a World Record Polar Bear with his Nickel 6 1/2'' Model 29.
The gun and Bear used to be at the Peterson Museum in LA.
He killed the bear with Norma 240gr 44 Magnum steel jktd sp ammo. l think Bob's 29 had smooth targets

l have a box of those NORMA 240gr steel jktd sp bullets(not ammo).
My first S&W was a nickel Model 29 with 8 3/8'' barrel.
l prefer used guns. When seeing one that catches my eye, my first thought is, ''lf that gun could talk''
