M29-5 question

[WHO CARES]

I have been noticing several M29's advertised on GB and such as 29-5's that have square butt frame configuration. I thought all M29-5's and later had the now current round butt frame?

Are these really 29-3's that are being misrepresented or did they make 29-5's with square butts?

Nope 29-5 was out in 1990-1994, then went to 29-6, both were square butt. During -6 production, in about 1995-6, they went to round butt. I believe the -5 and -6 29s are "sleepers", as they have all the endurance upgrades over the 29-3 & 29-4, but seem to still be reasonably priced. I have noticed a couple of 29-5s on GB that I consider a bargain.

Ken, thanks for response BUT..... I have three of the 90's classic series and all are 29-5's and all three are round butt. My next older is a 29-3 classic hunter with unfluted cylinder and it is a square butt.

I went with the 29-5's just to get the endurance package and have found that they are all great shoothers. I think they may represent some of the best shooting M29's Smith Wesson has put out.

Oops, you're right, the Classic series were round butt, but the standard version of the 29-5 had the square butt. I have the same types only in 629s. Have a 629-3 Classic that is a round butt, and my two 4" (629-3 & 629-4) have square butts. In the series, 629s were two dash #s behind the 29s.

Yes. The 29-5 CLASSICs were round butt. The "standard" (non-full lug barrel) 29-5 was square butt. During the 29-6 production, the standard gun (non-Classic) was changed from square to round butt.

My 29-5 is the full lug and has a round butt... it is also a very good shooter and shot nice clover shaped holes today on my first trip out with it.

Ken, does that mean that all 29-6's are round butt?

Catsfan, what barrel did you get? I've been shooting the 6.5" and the 5" and find them both pretty pleasing. I also enjoy the interchangeable front sight feature as I've never found the red ramps to be exactly what I wanted.

The more you shoot that gun the more you'll enjoy it!

Nope, not all 29-6 are round butts, very early in their run they were produced with square butts.

My lugless 29-5 has a square butt and fluted cylinder.
It shipped from the factory in 1992.

My first new S&W I bought was a 29-5 witha 6 inch barrel. It is a square butt gun and has been excellent all these years.
