M29 Stocks

Can someone identify these stocks, are they correct for a M29? The left, with the football indention looks correct. The right with the half-moon cutout is my concern. Is it for a special model? Thanks again.

If the photo is correctly oriented, the 'right' stock panel appears to have the speedloader cutout and the left panel does not have one. so I suspect the image is reversed. As noted above, no way to tell what they fit without more images.

We need some better pics, without flashlight, both of external sides and internal. Apparently something is wrong with these stocks: as yet said, the side of the speed loader cutout ; watching the photo, the book on the background appears correctly oriented, so the grips are too....

I have a couple of pairs of stocks like the ones shown. I believe stocks configured this way were made for an N-frame (including the Model 29) that has a special logo or emblem on the side plate (a commemorative or anniversary revolver). I don't know of any regular production Model 29s that shipped with stocks like this.

Thanks Bill, that's what I guessed. I'll sell these and find the correct one's for my standard 29.

Just remember when you get new stocks, the older 1's have the football {like yours} on the left grip. Newer 1's have the cut out. 29-2 would have the football. 29-3 would have the cut out. Bob

The rivet in the center of the washer in the stock panel with the speed loader cut is a brass color, and the rivet in the other panel with the ejector relief looks silver.

There might have been two sets at one time. One with the extractor/ football relief, and a second one with both sides cut out. There were both styles. Someone might have mixed up two pairs.

One nice feature about the stocks in the original post is that if you have an N-frame revolver with the side plate stamping of the S&W logo in the lower position, it will allow for unobstructed display of the logo.

One of my pet peeves concerning S&W target stocks is that they often cover up a good portion of the logo. This is especially true on K Masterpiece revolvers using standard target stocks.

Keep in mind that things weren't always clear cut as to when one style ended and the other started. My M29-3 came to me with Footballs. The gun's serial number and the date on the inside of the stocks seem to correspond, so I conclude they are probably original.

They look like what is installed on guns like "The Twelve Revolvers". I always called the presentation stocks, with room for emblems like Bill said.

I had an Out Numbered that was not finished with the embellishments and that it what it had.

Thanks for the reply. What does Out Numbered mean?

It was a one year subscription, sort of a revolver of the month club. Each revolver had a theme engraved on the right side. "Outnumbered" was the theme for September, and the revolver is called Outnumbered. Other scenes and names were "Mountain Lion", "Critical Moment", etc. Engraved line drawings.

The stocks on those guns were symmetrical, at least the ones I saw. None of those I saw had a football relief.

To expand on what Pete said, the 1990 series by the Ellett Brothers, Inc had mostly targets with a couple combats and one with magnas. The combats and targets all had that cutout on the right panel To be honest, I don't remember what the left panel on my uncompleted "Outnumbered" looked like. I sold it to a forum member some time ago.

According to SCSW, the two model 29's used checkered targets on one and smooth combats on the other.
