I have a model 36 I bought used a few years ago, and am trying to determine its age. I have the Standard Catalog, but it doesn't show my gun's serial no. configuration. The number is 2J7997. It came with walnut "diamond" grips, but I don't think they're original to the gun. They're numbered 274008. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Welcome! The SCSW has a typo in the J frame SN section. Yours is one of the 1971-'72 guns with a maximum of six characters, starting with 1J1 (the book says J1) and ending with 999J99, which has been named the "floating J" series. The original stocks would have had 7997 stamped. Hope this is helpful.
