M39 no dash will not strike the primer.

A friend owns this gun and according to him it just quit hitting the primer while he was shooting it. He assumed it had a broken firing pin and ordered one. I agreed to change the pin and found the old pin was in perfect shape and the new pin would not work as it's shank was shorter than the one in the gun and would not pull through the pin hole far enough for the safety to go back in. I cleaned the channel it sets in and reassembled it. It still will not mark the primer. It does not appear to be setting far enough past the safety for the hammer to give it a good blow. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

First, make sure the firing pin is going forward enough that the tip adequately protrudes from the hole in the breech face. If the tip does protrude from the breech face, then my next suspect would be the end of the firing pin that the hammer impacts. If that is not broken or deformed, then I would carefully inspect the hammer dropping safety drum for debris or damage.
 
I wonder if the hammer end of the firing pin might be peened enough to be dragging in the hole? If it can't move front to back freely, the firing pin spring may not be enough to return it. Just a wild guess from a revo guy.
 
It's not that terribly unusual to get either a wrong small part or one that's not to spec. You might take measurements of old & new and return the bad part-or maybe just save it. S&Ws official parts list has the model 39 firing pin and spring as a unit. The part # is 191590000. The spring is 100300000. All the later generations use the 106360000 firing pin, BUT: the spring is slightly different-106370000. Dunno if they will interchange, but the only difference I can think of involves the cut for the firing pin safety plunger.

If you try the newer generation firing pin, get the spring too.

ETA: make darn sure there's no broken off part of the original firing pin in the firing pin bore. I don't recall the brand involved, but a customer once had a broken firing pin where part of the original pin stayed in the bore.

If I was in Alabama and had this problem, I would reach out to BMCM and make arrangements to drive to his shop for the assessment and repair. Good service, good pricing, and a good investment in an all over check of the pistol.
