New member here and new owner of a 15-22. Lately I have had an over-whelming notion to swap out my 15-22 quadrail for an M4 carbine handgaurd. I just love the look and want the same for my rifle.

So, I have been researching this for months and before I take the plunge I wanted to check with the experts here that I've come to respect and admire so much.

Now I know that this could be quite a project but understand that it is do-able. So before I get into it I have compiled a short list of parts and tools that will be needed to complete this project.

If any members can add thier advice and/or direct me, please take a look at the list of parts and tools I have below and add or remove anything that is needed or not and perhaps add any other info that may be necessary.

Thank you in advance for your input.

Parts List:
  • Delta Ring Assembly Kit Kit
  • M&P 15-22 Free Float Barrel Nut Adapter
  • M4 Carbine Handgaurd
  • Front Handgaurd End-cap
  • A2 Barrel Mounted Front Sight (.625 bored out to .667) - ?How would it be secured to barrel?
  • Sling Swivel Parts

Tools List:
  • S&W M&P 15-22 Barrel Nut Wrench
  • M&P15-22 Barrel Vise Jaws
  • Delta Ring Wrench
  • Hand Guard Wrench
  • 'Brett248vista' how-to videos

Has anyone else undertaken this project? If so, how did it go? Got any pics? And was it worth it?

thanks!

thank you so much, it does look like a huge project, especially that spacer underneath the front sight post.

Cheers!

That spacer is what turned me away =/

You can contact Brett (Belt_Fed) he may make the spacers for you guys, or you could order a small section of DOM Tubing that measures .750 Outer Diameter the inside diameter will be correct for this use, then you simply cut to length and run a slot down the center either with a hack saw or a dremel.

It's so worth it :)

Thank you for the info Brett, I'll give the DOM a shot and update the thread. And I've really enjoyed your videos, they are priceless and I've always looked forward to seeing all the incarnations of your rifle.

BTW - I found DMO on this site, http://www.metalsdepot.com/products/hrsteel2.phtml?page=rndtube&LimAcc=$LimAcc

So, as long as it O.D. is .750 I'm good to go? Just cut to length?

Thanks

You need this one specifically:

T234065 1020 DOM Structural Round Steel Tube 3/4 OD x .065 wall x .620 ID

That is the correct OD and ID... No machining required. Just cut to length and slot and call it a day!

Oh, and just to clarify. That particular DOM part number you referred to is used assuming that I use the same Armalite clamp on front sight?

Not necessarily, your MP's barrel is .620 plus or minus a couple of thousands and standard AR barrels, what the Armalite sight is meant to fit, are standardized at .750 (3/4") again plus or minus a bit.
So the DOM tubing he specified with a slot cut into it should take up for any variations in either the sight or the barrel without the need for anything more elaborate than a hacksaw or Dremel tool to cut the slot.
So if you find a different sight & gas port setup you like better meant for an AR barrel, it should fit just as well.

Exactly... With only one caveat, the easiest way to do this is with a "clamp on" sight. So whatever you use get something that clamps on. Standard AR sight posts are held on with straight or tapered drift pins and that would require machining the barrel of the rifle and the spacer to allow those pins to be tapped through. Stick with .750OD and clamp on and you are good 2 go!

That's not right. I'm the one who figured out to use the armalite clamp-on sight and the 3/4" dom tubing as being the easiest way to mint an a2 sight on this barrel. You need to use something around .035" or .040" Wall thickness tubing. I don't have alot posts on here so if you search through my previous posts, you'll find the info I posted on this conversion.

Needed to ask you a question about converting my 15-22 quadrail to an M4 handguard.

So I purchased Tacticool22's barrel nut adapter, my question is - do I need to also purchase a standard AR barrel nut to interface with his adapter or does Jody's adapter take care of the entire solution?

I've been a little unclear about how the barrel nut adapter and delta ring interface together onto the barrel.

Just got a personalized package in the mail yesterday from Tacticool.

I am sure all needed items will be spelled out nicely upon arrival.

My new stock swivel works wonderfully...

What's not right? I am here to help fellow members. If you want, feel free to do the same. That's why I am here and that is what I do. Am I missing something???

PLC,

You need a complete "Delta Ring Pack" which includes the Delta Ring, Weld Spring and Snap Ring and you need an AR-15 Barrel Nut.

I think that he was referring to the 0.620" ID for the tubing. The barrel is closer to 0.67 and requires DOM tubing with a 0.035 or 0.040 wall thickness. I don't think he was digging on your advice, I know I've found it invaluable myself.

Many thank you's Brett248Vista. I had a feeling I might need one so I went ahead and "pulled the trigger" on a DPMS.

I can't wait to share the pics.

Many humble-newbie-thanks to everyone for the assistance.

what do you guys think the m4 handguard or the magpul carbine handguard? and if so the magpul do you install it the same way?

You need the delta ring assembly and all the front sight stuff.
The adapter takes the place of the factory 15-22 barrel nut. It has the same outside threads as an AR upper, so anything that will screw onto an AR should work on the adapter.
Tighten the adapter, with the larger threaded diameter towards the upper and the smaller non threaded diameter towards the muzzle. Tighten it to "spec" then screw on your delta ring assembly or free float hand guard. Tighten to "spec" again.
If you have a free float hand guard, your done.
If you are doing a standard two piece hand guard continue with Bretts great instructions.

The M4 vs MOE question is one you'll have to answer for yourself. I like the Magpul better and moved my gas block forward so I could mount a mid-length MOE handguard on mine. The MOE is more expensive than the M4 handguards, but offers more flexibility if you want to add rails. It has provisions for mounting rails at 12, 2, 6 and 10 o'clock. If you choose to go the M4 route, let me know. I'v got a set of M4 handguards I'll let you have.

what holds the front of the magpul handguard on? is it still the front handguard cap?

Yes, the handguard cap holds the front of the MOE handguard. The barrel hole in the handguard cap will be sized for a .750 AR barrel and will flop about like a fish. I put a screw through the cap and into the gas tube hole in my gas block. Now, the handguard is rock solid. My gas block is aluminum, so I just drove the screw into the hole. If you use a steel gas block or front sight, you might have to tap the gas tube hole. Here is mine with the carbine length handguard. Now, it's sporting a mid-length (about 2 inches longer) MOE handguard.

Shawn,

That's a fine looking 15-22 right there!

Thanks, Brett. It looks even better with the mid-length handguard on it. I'll get some pictures up tomorrow. Today, I'm at work until 6.

I'd love to get a CASV-EL, too. Sometimes, you can find them for around $160 on AR15.com.
