I purchased a M49-2 the other day and can't find the date in the S&W Book. I believe it is 1990 or newer. If it's in the book, I need help finding it. #BKA42XX. Thanks.

I have my own list of s/n's and ship dates. Just for Smiths since 1980. There is a section toward the back of the SCSW with all kinds of s/n's and dates going waaaaaaay back.

The 3rd edition lists BHTxxxx as January 1992 and then skips to BKZxxxx as February 1992. That would indicate yours sometime between the two. This is on page 400.
Be warned though... S&W has a habit of using serial numbers out of order so your gun could have been later. The -2 started in 1990 and the -3 started in 1996. There are other tips that can help determine the year like if the gun has a matte blue finish, synthetic grips or the new style extractor.

The OP's has a BPY serial number. Alphabetically that does NOT lie between BHT and BKZ. (It comes after BKZ).
