Could a model 17 crane and cylinder be used as an accessory .22 lr piece for a model 53 to shoot .22 Lr versus using the inserts?

No. The model 17 cylinder is shorter and would result in a very large barrel to cylinder gap.
And the 22 Magnum Jet 22LR cylinders can be very pricey.

Thanks all. Figures, nothing is easy or cheap. Not really an issue, if I want to shoot cheap, grab the 17, 18 or other. If I want to shoot small bullets fast grab the 53 or BKH31.
