I recently came into a 581 no dash last summer. As it didn’t have the M stamp, I sent it in to S&W for the recall. I’ve not shot it much, but found it is quick and accurate in the short sessions I had.

I intend on using it at the next ICORE match.

So, report to roll call with your M581s

Obligatory picture before I put on a set of VZ grips

Well, there's this one.. (with it's cousin)...

Shot my M581 in today’s ICORE match. A fun day. I do enjoy this gun, more so with the VZ grips and now that I painted the front sight- helps me a great deal.

I generally shoot the fixed sight revolvers better than their adjustable sight counterparts. I have a couple 586s and really want a 581 but I'm fussy. It has to be pristine and I won't buy an old revolver that doesn't have the matching box. Love the 581s. One of these days I hope to be reporting for duty. Sir.

That's what I'm talkin about! Pristine condition with box. Nice!

A 581 has been on my radar for a few years! Few and far in between around these parts!
The hunt continues.

Mine is a shooter, not collector grade. Has some finish wear near the muzzle but locks up well. Didn’t come w/ a box and had houge grips. That said, for $500, am pleased with it and hope to shoot it more this season.

I picked-up mine at a Cabela's Fine Gun Room for just over $400 maybe 6-8 years ago in 90%+ condition. Shoots right on the sights with standard 158 gr ammo. It's my only L-frame.

My 581

Here is my 581 (Early Serial # AAA40XX). Really like the Factory Combat grips but may have Curt make me a set of Target grips when he gets to me on his list. Also my 681.

Don't see many 681s. Why is it every time I go on this forum I end up buying another gun? You guys really are killing me.

Pulled my M581 out of the safe to give it some sunshine at our icore match today. The gun ran fine and I felt comfortable shooting it. I plan on shooting it much more over the winter & giving my M21-4 a break (38 brass is far cheaper to replace than 44).

I do enjoy this gun. Next match is Sat & will report in the competition section.

I had a 681 40+ years ago. Because it had a shorter Waiting List than the 586/686. Once I got a 686 I sold the 681 to another cop.

I prefer the 686 because it has a Premium look to it.

While I generally don’t care for the full lug barrel I do for some reason like the 581. . Not to common, and I doubt I will ever stumble across one at the same time I have the money to buy it. I hate stainless, but since the 681 is more common, I may end up with one of those I guess.
