Greeting’s from Alabama. I recently purchased a new to me 629-2E. From what I’ve searched they are relatively rare. This one seems to be in good condition for its age. Has a trigger job and is very smooth. I’m really pleased with the purchase, I think it’s a great looking gun.

Wondering if you guys with more knowledge would know a good OWB holster option. This is my first post. Thanks

Looks like you picked up a real nice one. Congratulations. I love 3" N frames. I had two of the 2E's. Both of mine came with box and papers. Here is the one I let go. The one I kept is just like yours with the Pachmayr grippers. They handle recoil very well with factory 44 magnum ammo. I purchased a Galco holster for mine. It isn't my first choice because of the stiffness and thickness of that brand. But it was the first one I could buy in person, and it does work well. Also, it was priced lower than others.

Appreciate it. I can’t wait to get it to the range. I’ve never shot a 44 before. I went ahead and got a desantis scabbard. Should be here in a few days. I like those grips on your old one. I’ve been thinking about getting some badger wood grips. See how I like shooting with them. Probably switch back to the pachmyers for hotter loads lol

I’ve got a 629-2e as well mint in the box. Had the pachmayrs on it but took those off and put some factory combats on it. Traded a 696 44 spl even to it. Loved the 696 but rather be able to shoot mag and spl both and has the 6th round instead of 5.

Just ordered some badger zebra wood grips. Will post when I have them on. Do you guys shoot yours regularly? I know this is a pretty stout gun but it is 35ish years old. Damn near older than me.

I don't have a 629, but I do have a 29-3. The "E" in the model designation notes that it has the earliest stage of S&W's Endurance Package, making these basically early versions of the 29-4/629-3. If you stick with full power loads using bullets weighing not more than 250 grains, you should be just fine. Given the barrel length of yours, you likely won't want to shoot heavier loads and you may find that full power 240 grain loads are a bit stout for extended range sessions.

Check your 629-2E for cylinder end shake, it needs a minimum of 0.001" fore and aft travel for smooth function, but should not have more than 0.004" of travel.

It definitely has end shake. I need to get the tool to measure it. 240 should be plenty with the occasional +P or +P+ though I read on buffalo bore and underwood’s website not to use smiths for their +P+ 340 grain rounds.

There is no such thing as 44 Magnum +P or +P+, same goes for 44 Special. SAAMI has specifications for some +P calibers, but none for the 44's. I'd avoid ammo marked as 44 Magnum +P in a S&W Model 29 or 629, keep that stuff for Colt, Dan Wesson, or Ruger revolvers.

For measuring end shake, you just need a set of feeler gauges. Lock the cylinder into the frame, push the cylinder forward and measure the space between the cylinder and forcing cone, then push the cylinder backward and remeasure that space, the difference is the end shake measurement.

Appreciate the info. Will do that today

Pretty tight pushed forward, feeler gage I got did not have .001 but I couldn’t get the .002 through. .004 pushed back. Took it to the range today. Put 50 rounds of 240 grain through it. Kicks like a mule. No malfunctions. I love this gun
