Hello, fairly new to revolvers and have noticed my M63 no dash has started to bind and lock the action while firing. Starts off fine and then becomes more difficult to cycle the action to the point it is even difficult to open the cylinder.

With cylinder empty and open there is a specific point in rotation that the extractor will not fully seat after pushing on the extractor rod. If I then rotate the cylinder slightly the extractor will then fully seat.

I will remove and clean the cylinder assembly and make sure there is no gunk binding the action.

If it still persists I will check to see if something is bent.

Any ideas? Thanks

Sounds like you have a good plan. You may have to disassemble the assembly. I've got a feeling that the rod may be bent.

Thanks John for the reply.

Removed and disassmebled the cylinder assembly. Cleaned and oiled.

With assembled while still removed from frame the extractor star does the same thing at the same point. For most of the rotation everything is smooth with the extractor fully extending and returning. However at the same rotation point the extractor will stick out about the width of a .22 case rim on it's return. If I rotate the cylinder the extractor will then snap into fully seated position.

So, am assuming probably need the extractor rod replaced. Other ideas?

Thanks again.

Roll your disassembled extractor rod on a glass plate to see if it is bent. Do the same for the center rod. Examine the extractor rod springs to see if they are kinked or have rub marks showing where they rub against the inside of the crane axle. If bent or kinked, you can try straightening, but it is usually easier to replace.

Look for burrs on the end of the extractor shaft and the hole in the cylinder. Stone or use 600 grit wet-or-dry paper on them if found. Clean with solvent, lube, and reassemble.

While you're at it, give the face (front) of the cylinder a good, thorough cleaning. I've seen lead buildup cause binding, and could even lock the thing up. Also check and clean under the star extractor. If that doesn't do it, look for the mechanical problems.

In addition to the above, take a good look at the front latch for the extracter rod and the end of the extracter rod where it engages the latch. A chunk of debris in the end of the extracter, or inthe latch, might cause it to "cam" the extracter back as the cylinder rotates. However, I suspect that you probably have a bent extracter caused my someone who saw too many TV shows where some idiot flipped the cylinder closed.
