M639

Got a chance at a M639, and from the pics, ultra clean, maybe never shot. He is asking $800 OBO. What do you guys think? Honestly, I am a revolver guy, but for some reason, I have a hankering for a M39 or M59, maybe both. I know this is neither, but it's close. I don't see many of these, and this one is so clean, box, papers, even vapor barrier, that she is calling my name. So, is she worth it, or should I offer him less? Thanks

Price is too high,

You can buy a brand new 3953TSW from Bud's for $657.00.

Read the thread on that (above), some posters tell of the deals they have gotten for lot less than $800.00

It's not terribly common, I don't think. I would imagine you could score one for closer to $500-$600, but maybe not in quite as good condition. I have the 3rd Gen equivalent, the 3906. The 639 has the usual differences between 2nd and 3rd gen. You can get beautiful wood grips for the 639, which I wish could be said for the 3906. I've never shot the 639, but the 3906 is my favorite pistol, ergonomically. The 639 ought to be very similar. Oh yeah, it carries well due to the single stack.

If you want a gun with nicks,dents,dings,scratches and scuffs without a box and papers,you can find one for less. If you want a gun that is ANIB with all of the goodies,that price is fair. It's a gun seldom seen offered for sale,even less so in the condition you describe. I sold one in the classifieds here about a year ago that was NIB for $850.....in about 30 minutes! Seems nobody wants to pay a fair market price anymore. If it ain't a steal,it's too high. One thing we preach here is "Condition,condition,condition." Well,expect to pay more for the high-condition guns. It ain't rocket science fellas.

I agree with this sentiment. The only thing I was suggesting was that you can get a VERY shootable, nice looking 639 for less money. Probably by $150 or $200.

That said, if you won't terribly miss the extra money spent, I say go for it. It sounds like a great example. If you were looking to get a gun for as cheap as possible, you wouldn't be looking at a 2nd Gen to begin with.

I understand what you are saying,but I was responding to the OP's request for an opinion as to value of an example such as the one he describes. I feel pretty sure that you can find an example that is extremely finish challenged,yet still shoots like a laser,for half of the one the OP is considering. Where one draws the line is purely a personal decision.

Thanks for all the input guys. Also, thanks to all you that sent me PM's. I've got to say, I am always overwhelmed by the amount of help I get on this Forum. It's not a lot of places where you can get the type of help you get here, but then again, in my experience, most gun people are like that. Make that at least 90 -95% of us. Now, one of you even offered up one of his M639s to me. Now it wasn't LNIB, but it was in the box, with papers, and it is in very good shape. I just want to say thanks to all of you, and thanks to Chris.
