M640 Mini Torture Test

In my experience, these little J Frames just seem to run forever, unless of course you purposely abuse it. I currently possess 2_or these extremely reliable weapons, my 642 2", & my 640 3". Naturally of course, the 640 which sports the 3" HB tends to shoot much tighter groups, although this is to be expected due to its barrel & steel frame. Just for the record though, my 642 which came Factory Magna-Ported is quite controllable, just not quite as accurate as my steel framed 3". Personally, I would just LOVE the 3" to have an Alloy Frame, & everything else as it is, 3" HB, etc. IIRC, S&W began Cataloging the 3" 642's shortly after their introduction, yet I don't think any 3" models were ever produced for some reason. If I had to venture a guess, S&W probably assumed the Alloy 3" wouldn't sell ? As for the O/P, I tend to prefer the Buffalo Bore 150 gr. [?] Full Wadcutter [ Hard Cast, w/ Sharp Cut Face ] for any up close & personal work for my 2". The 3" is 'somewhat' more likely to initiate projectile expansion, although with .38 Spl.+P velocities nothing is a given. At this point in time, I've accepted the fact that the 5 rd J Frames are best utilized for close in, rapidly produced [ drawn ] self defense work. I believe that they excell for that particular mission. I like the fact that in the cooler / colder months, I can simply put either of mine, 640 or 642 in my coat pocket, & even fire it that way should the need arise. [ AND YES, you might wish to dump your coat almost immediately after the situation has been neutralized, as it probably be on fire, or at least smoldering. ] For anything other than over the 7 yard line, I usually call upon my Kahr PM9, although my 3" 640 would suffice up to a point. SORRY for my apparent Post Jacking, as it wasn't intended. O/P, Enjoy your little 640, as it should serve you quite well.

Don't worry about the vertical spread. In a shooting, they are usually on target. Horizontal, not so. Appears that little piece is good to go.

I had a 638 with a just under 3" barrel. I bought it thinking it would be perfect. Not a lot of them were made.

They are out there. Not a lot of them but they do exist.

I reckon one of us has to be the oddball. Pick me.

I only practice with, shoot, and carry .357s in my 640-1 Pro. The big difference between mine and every other one I've seen is the Karl Nill grips made specifically for a Centennial. They make all the difference in the world.

The one round -- out of all I've tried -- where POA = POI is the Barnes 140gr Lead Free (all copper) hollow point so that's what I shoot.

I have posted this pic before, but in the guns, you will see a 3" 642 product code #103798. They do exist so there's hope for you!

640-1 was the first gun I bought when I got my carry permit many years ago. I’ve bought, sold and traded many, many handguns over the years. This is the one I would pick if I could have one of them back.

Forgot to post an image of mine.
Mine wears the discontinued Uncle Mike's rubber boot grips. Makes it a very compact revolver.

THANK YOU 'jcelect' for that very enlightening confirmation that the all elusive 3" HB M-642 does indeed exist !! ( Well, at least a few of them must be around somewhere. ) IIRC, way back when S&W initially introduced the 640, & then 642 Series, I 'think' I may have seen one in a Dealer's case, but as I needed a 'Back Up' piece to pocket in addition to my 4" M-64 occasional on Details so I ended up with the 2" 640. Later, when I started seeing 642's available, I sold of my 640 to another Officer & grabbed the 642. The best part was this 642 appeared to part of a special run for RSR, IIRC, & was a Factory Magna-Ported 'Ladysmith'. ( Yes, I admit, I did think twice about carrying a Ladysmith, but function is function, right ? Other than that small script Ladysmith engraved on the Frame, it's otherwise the same. ) I still have it, a little worn now for many, many rides in my pocket, ankle, or elsewhere but remains perfectly functional as new. And although I will always cherish my little 642, I will now definitely keep my eyes open for my elusive 3" 642. Honestly, I was actually thinking about picking up one of the Ruger LCRx 3" HBO .38's. As an alloy framed Revolver, it remains lightweight, yet still offers the ballistics of a 3" barrel. My 'problem' remains that when I actually get close to making a decision to purchase one, I start telling myself that my little Kahr PM9 is an 3.1" bbl 9mm, which theoretically makes the Ruger redundant, right ? See what happens to those who think a little too much ? Yup, it's called 'indecision' !!

10-04 on that my Friend !! Nope, no rope for me, I have an alternative method, as all my life I've tended to do things 'my way'. ( Sing it Frank !! ) I'll use one of my 8mm Jap Nambu pistols, just to annoy, & perhaps momentarily confuse the folks from the Coroner's Office ! Or if I think it will actually function, I'lk try my Jap Type 26 9mm Revolver, & that would definitely have them looking through their ballistics databases. BUT, I don't think that will ever happen to me, as my my 2 awesome Grandchildren would be most assuredly upset by it ! The only plausible scenario would be if Swillery Clinton managed to buy her way into the Oval Office !!!

Best, Dom
