I have an opportunity to acquire a 4inch M66 S/N AYY1xxx. There appears to be a lot of discoloration/ wear near the muzzle. What would be a decent price to buy this revolver, and where can I get it restored? Thanks, sorry for poor photos I will try to get better ones tomorrow.

Saw an earlier one go for $900.00 on an auction today, 7K17533. This one looks to be very dirty, might clean up without a need for "restoration." The beauty of stainless is that it is durable.

Welcome to the S&W Forums!

I think $900 would be a really long stretch for Model 66 that is pictured. I dunno, given the apparent condition, I'm thinking that one might be more of a $500 revolver. Those marks on the barrel might be where someone tried to use a buffing wheel to remove scuffs and scratches. I would want to do a thorough inspection before proceeding with a purchase.

There's 14+ years difference in age between these two SN's; his AYY----- would be a dash-3, dates to 1988 and is not as collectible as the 7K----- gun, which dates to 1974, and makes it a no-dash, with the P&R features desired by many.

I agree with stansdds, looks like someone tried to polish out some defects (would need better pictures to see for sure). The entire gun would need polishing to work out the differences in finish. I'd also agree with the $500 value, dependent on the gun's mechanical condition.

Personally I would skip any firearm with a battered muzzle area. Grips are wrong.
Get it for a shooter grade price. I dont know if i would bother with a resto.
I love the 66 but I might let this one go for something better if seller wants north of $500.

I got a LNIB 4" M66 w/factory combat & standard grips for $600 a couple of years ago.

Thanks for all the replies. I won't be able to get better pictures for at least 2 weeks. I will post them then.
