I'm afraid I know the answer, but thought I'd post the question since I am not 100% certain I have gotten all the right info.

THE SET-UP:

I have an IMAC desktop that I purchased new in 2005 or 2006. The version is 10.4.11. Apple no longer supports it, and hasn't for several years. It works, though there are some problems the Geek Squad was unable to fix, but it still works "good-enuf" for me to do a little Word and a lot of surfing the Net.

THE PROBLEM:

My wife wants a new Ipod for Christmas, the Nano or the Touch. I noticed that both need a newer version to support either (10.6.8 or better).

My wife "heard" that there was an Ipod, maybe the Touch, that downloaded music directly onto the Ipod without going anywhere near the home computer (no plugging it in to access Itunes). Downloads directly from the Apple Store or wherever that stuff comes from.

ANSWERS:

I know it is Christmas time, but I love my wife, so taking my life in my hands, I went to Best Buy today. An hour of trying to flag down an employee resulted in three stopping to answer my question-Is there an Ipod that doesn't need a computer to download music?

Answer one-"Yes, the Touch, you don't need a computer. I'd help you but I have three customers already waiting."

Answer two-"No, you must download the music to Itunes, then plug your Ipod (all models) into your computer and download the music to it. I'd help you, but I just stepped away from my cashiering as I saw you trying to trip another employee for help."

Answer three-" Yes and No. With the Touch you can bypass Itunes to download, but still need to plug the Ipod into the computer." I think he was the janitor.

I suppose I could just bite the bullet and buy a new IMac, for just under $1200 plus tax (on sale).

But, if I don't have to do that, I'd rather spend the $1200.00 on ammo, targets, etc. :D and spend less than $300.00 for the Touch.

I would not buy anything but a MAC if I have to do that.

Anyone know for sure?

Bob the confused one.

the newest IOS 7 lets you download Music & Apps right into the IOS Device
iPhone Ipod (touch) or iPad

answer 1 is right you don't NEED a Mac but it does help
and BTW i have a 2006 iMac and it WILL run os 10.6.x

so if you can find someone with an OS 10.6 DVD you probably can install it on your Mac

If you want the best info, go to an apple store. Their no commission people are knowledgeable and will spend the time to give the best answer. Of course during the holiday season, try to go on off peak hours. Probably 8 AM am on Tuesday during a blizzard! They are excellent, though.
Imac, Iphone 4, Ipad. All work great!

Chief, if I waited for a blizzard here in Florida, my wife wouldn't get a gift and I'd be in big trouble. Of course our Apple Store is located in the most upscale mall in Tampa.

Jeff-your PM thingee is too full, I couldn't reply to your last.

An upgrade to Snow leopard (10.6) should be a priority. I can't answer your questions about iPods but I can tell you Snow Leopard was one of the most stable and efficient OS's Apple ever made. I use a 2007 macbook with it frequently and everything just hums along.

No problem. My 12 year old downloads on his iPod touch all the time. He also texts and can make phone calls on his Touch!
When he called me the first time I thought he was a genius but he said no dad, there's an app for calling, even gave him a phone number.
My iMac has to be at least as old as yours and I am running the newest OS on it. No problem. I'm sure you can too.

Bottom line? No computer needed, and you can do amazing things with a Touch.

I must have missed something despite a re-read: this seems entirely solvable with a simple update to OS 10.6.

As others have said, the answer is yes for the iPod Touch working solo on your home wireless network.

Your Mac is a bit before my time... but from what little I have read if you have an Intel processor I believe you should be able to install Snow Leopard. You can get the disc from Apple for $20. If you go that route, I'd be interested to hear how it turns out.

Do you know what processor you have. If it is 32-bit processor you will not be able to install anything above OSX 10.6 (Snow Leopard) since Apple dropped support for 32-bit processors in OSX 10.7 (Lion). Good luck in finding an installation disk for OSX 10.6.
