I have ran out of large pistol primers but have 1000 large magnum pistol primers. I have been loading 4.6 gr. of bullseye with a 200 gr. SWC. Could mag primers be used if I reduced the load? I also have unique on hand. Any advice. I read not to use mags. with fast burning powder.

I normally use Mag primers in all my loads. As long as you start low and work up it should be as safe as any other component change. As for gilt edged accuracy, I can't shoot well enough to tell.

Personally, I'd use a mid-range load of Unique to leave myself a little margin. You might be OK with the Bullseye, might not.

Howdy

Howdy,
The Winchester primers state "Large pistol for standard or magnum loads" on the carton.
Hope that helps.

Your load is a little above start or light target but its still under maximum according to several data sources. While there's no danger in using mag primers with your load there is likely to be some change in velocity + or - and may change accuracy so you may want to load a few to shoot first and adjust if needed. Running them over a chrono could give you some insight as to what changes if any have occured with the change in prmer.

Mag primers affect diff powders at diff. charge wts. I ran a chrono test using 45acp:
230grLRN, 4.5gr WST
FedLP = 808fps
RemLP = 811fps
CCILPM= 809fps
SO you can see, very little vel. increase w/ this midrange load. Other powders show diff. results, but if your load is well below max. changing primers should have little affect.
