I don't know what was first but I do remember in the movie Magnum Force where the M.E. looks into the car at a murder victim and says " looks like he used a magnum"

I forget which TV series but a
point was made of such declarations.

At the crime scene the M.E. was asked
what the victim was shot with.

"Definitely a .45," was the response.

Later, the M.E. would announce he
dug a 9mm out of the victim.

It was a running gag all the time and
was part of the fun of the show.
