I believe the grip wedge only works with the MIAD grip, but I am not certain.

Correct. The wedge only works with some of the backstrap options of the MIAD from what I know--I have more than my share of weapons with the MIAD and MOE. The wedge was created for the MIAD fitting on larger .308 frame AR lowers like DPMS, KAC, etc.

for install i used a miad with the smallest back, and the spring with no hole falls into a channel in the grip. i put a piece of a wooden qtip stick in there to prop up the spring, and it's been just fine. i just tried a toothpick.. even better if cut to right length. it narrows so it goes into the spring.
