Call me the Donald Trump of the holster industry. My stated goal, for all my posts on all Forums, is to increase awareness of what the state of the art is; to the level of appreciating holster design as a science not a craft; and I won't apologise for continuing to bang that drum. Holster making involves carrying deadly weapons, it is no longer a craft. And that's why I left leathercrafters.net in the second day; it is NOT a hobby.

I critique every maker's work, from the smallest to the largest. If they can't handle that from the leading expert in the world, then I'd say I've hit a nerve. Those who want to do better, listen. Those who don't want scrutiny, arc up. I'm no maker's competitor; I'm a designer with credentials from every major name-maker and pull no punches.

Red, I think enough of the name I contacted you when your class was being considered back in '13, appreciation of the knowledge isn't the issue I was pointing out but tact. The Donald does seem to be popular these days though. ;)

Red, I'm just a guy that likes to learn about other leather and holster workers and their work. Please excuse me for not recognizing your position as the world's leading holster expert.
I would love to see examples of your holster designs. Heck, I might have made some and not even known they came from you.

Sorry some of us don't measure up to your extremely high standards.. Most of us are doing it just for fun as a Hobby and are not experts ,, or even self proclaimed experts.. :D :eek: :rolleyes:

I work in retail and I'm the very model of tact and persuasion there. No, not commission sales. My goal there is to put DIY homeowners together with what they need to be a success in their projects: it's all about their skills, not mine.

Conversely, when I consult with holster manufacturers about design and production, my goal is to make their products world class. Again, I'm a model of diplomacy. That's just good business. Yes, I get paid for this.

But dealing with amateurs who treat holster design and production with any less awareness than top-range -- that is, they 'don't know what they don't know' -- well, I'm professionally offended and I 'get attitude'. I want these people to bring up their professionalism, and my method is to raise their buyers' awareness.

My metaphor: if a barista doesn't know how to make a good coffee, my request for a better one will get me nowhere; he simply doesn't know how to do better, or he would have got it right in the first place. So I buy my coffees elsewhere, where they already know excellence.

Unlike coffees, tho, ignoring the science of excellent holster design and manufacture has gotten people killed. And getting it right has saved lives. Have a chat with the chief executive at any major maker -- Galco or Safariland et al. -- and you'll hear the same attitude about amateur makers, because this is not a game.

Rather than posting up my own pics, which is against the spirit of the Forum's policy of non-sponsors showing off their work, you can see my work simply by Googling 'red Nichols holster'. The 'images' portion of the search is also informative. Many of my patents will come up, too, because the RED comes from my initials (r.e.d.) and my actual name is Richard :-)

Fair enough. I'm computer challenged, but a cursory search reveals that High Noon Holsters once carried some of your designs, but no longer do.

I assume you don't intend to come off as arrogant and condescending, but as I reread your posts, I can't seem to find much other way to take you.

I'm more than willing to learn from constructive criticism, but all I see in your posts is that you know it all, and we should worship you.

I have no dog in the fight, however I think gregintenn nailed it fairly well.
I don't care for self-proclaimed experts in any field.
 
Wow, we get some real special people here, don't we! Imagine. A guy that designed holsters. That compares himself to Donald Trump. We...lucky...few.... Actually, Paul Keating comes to mind when I read reds posts.

I lived in Australia for 16 years, (I still have my R.M. Williams boots, and actually met Mr. Williams in Toowoomba, in '86...quite a humble gentleman) and I promise you, arrogance is cheap down there. They give it away.

I BUY holsters, and I know what to look for now. After all these years.....:rolleyes:

This puzzles me, this 'shooting the messenger' about safety in the design of holsters. Is it because some members actually don't believe this happens? Useful information for my next court appearance in products liability cases. I'll print out a copy for the Court. And for the widow.

It also puzzles me how often on a gun forum, some arse will make a point out of my Australia base. Why would anyone assume I'm anything but an American because of it? Maybe it's a Texan thing.

Perhaps Ian Fleming said it best: "I've been pestiferated ever since Sports Illustrated ran that article about Bond's weapons . . . Since that article appeared I've had hundreds of letters from weapon maniacs - and they are maniacs; they're terrifying . . ..". I think I'll edit the opening of my forthcoming book to include those words of wisdom :-)

I did that little google search for images.....If all those holsters are your design,
you got a lot of patent infringements going on thar pard.

Did find that there is really nothing new down under the sun.

Gees, I jest been making em for 40 sumthing years and
never felt the need to boast...I let my rigs do the talking. ;):D

Sir as a Lawyer I must inform you that; that design could get you killed ....... no seat belt or anyway to mount a car seat for the kiddies......... remember a badly designed saddle could get you Killed!!!!!!!

Is that white thing an "airbag"??

A certain commentator says occasionally, "It ain't bragging if you can do it." Red Nichols has criticized my stuff before and I skip getting mad and think about what he's saying instead and wonder how to fix it. There are some great holster makers here whose work just knocks me out and who I get along great with. Turnerriver is my go to guru for holster history. Red is the same thing plus holster construction details. When I dug up a simple but scarce junk box Berns-Martin IWB holster, I really got the lowdown on this uncatalogued item from both of them.

Red - I'm all ears. What my eyes can't see are where you recommend any form of actual critique, or point out how to fix it. From your coffee analogy you are not actually interested in trying to teach - so why say anything at all? Your taking a victim mentality in this post when you started the discussion in the first place. It isn't shooting the messenger to ask for a source of past cases - google does not turn up valid sources for such instances and many a maker could benefit from trying to diagnose such a catastrophic failure. Without being able to verify a case it's like the popular insurance commercial and the french model.

Big makers obviously have larger resources to funnel into research and design. The problem for someone trying to gain knowledge in this industry is you can't just go to one and say "I want to learn the why, not the what." Been there, tried that. That leaves interested parties little choice minus a few various books, video sources, and a lot of trial and error.

Safety is obviously a very real priority, there is no prize for second place.

Stompin broncs and skinning mules have come close a few times.
But I ain't never been kilt yet. :D

Oh, those 'white things' there's one on each side of the swells,
'Buckin Rolls' as the old hands call em. ;)

I'll take those design flaws under advisement, but don't expect a re-call of any kind...;):D

Sorry that I am so picture posting challenged, or I would post my most recent IWB holster. I think it turned out very well and I am proud of the workman ship. I make my own holster based on what think will be comfortable for me. while working on "my idea of a holster' I think about retention, comfort durability, stitching and rivet placement. I have made some holsters that didn't work out and some that worked very well. what I make I make for myself. everything is hand cut sewn, and burnished. http://smith-wessonforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=210103&stc=1&d=1442602688ut,.
I did find a way to post a picture after all. this is my take on a snap on holster or use clips.
