I have made my own holsters for over 40 years.
I open carry, so I'm not concerned with concealing my Sigma.

The pdf file is too large to post here, due to the pictures. So it's on my wife's web site.

Click on the link to the .pdf file with pictures and instructions on how to make a retention holster. http://jewelryart.org/PDF/Retention_holster.pdf

I tested this, with my neighbor trying to pull the pistol from the holster, while he was behind me. He almost jerked me off my feet, but never got the gun out of the holster.

Interesting... But for the cost of the materials, you could purchase something pre-made. You can get a fobus from ebay for less than 15.00.

Granted, you are open carrying. And more than likely, since you are in California, you are doing it on your property, so there is not much worry about someone taking it from you.

It is true that you can open in California, in authorized places, as long as the weapon is un-loaded? It think that would kinda defeat the purpose of carrying.. Them lawmakers in California are a different bunch when it comes to self protection ;).

I mess around with Kydex and this sounds interesting. Problem is they say "Thickness is about .038 inches (.98 mm) or a little less than 1/16 of an inch. Each full size sheet (44 inches by 54 inches) only weighs about 3 to 3 1/2 lbs". So 4 layers X 1 sq. ft. would roughly 1/4 inch and weigh about 3 lbs. That just don't sound right? It's also very costly at $58. for a 4 sq. ft. sheet.

A sheet 44" X 54" is 2378 sq in. or 16.5 Sq Ft. and weighs 3-3.5 #. How does four 1 sq ft pieces weigh 3#? seems it would be well under 1 pound.

I've open carried in CA since 1988. On my property, I OC loaded, just like I do when in AZ and MO. Every place else in CA has to be unloaded. As long as you are aware of the school zones, there's usually no problem.

In all those years, I've only been stopped once and that was two weeks ago when I was SWA (shopping while armed) and some bed wetter in the store called 911. It was a customer and the employees gave her hell for making the deputies waste their time.

I just weighed my holster and it weighs 5.8 oz.

As far as cost, with one large sheet, I've made several holsters, knife sheaths, magazine holders and still have enough left for more holsters.

Instead of painting the holster, you can glue leather to the outside. The latest one I did that to, I used a stingray hide.

Buying a holster without making sure the gun fits is something I never do. Making the holster so it is a custom fit seems better.
