Through the years, many men have found it beneficial to have a special room or area that is just theirs...a place where they can unwind, think, write, read, work on projects, or what have you. It could be a room in the house, a garage, a workshop, or an old shed. Whether you call it a man cave, man room, shop, or den, the purpose is the same.

It's one of those places that when you enter, you can tell it is definitely a masculine lair. It practically reeks of testosterone.

I have a room in the basement that our grandkids have named, "The Lodge." I've posted a picture of it previously. Here are a few more.

There's an old nail keg in one corner that contains a bunch of old, hand-carved walking sticks if anyone has an inclination to take a hike up the mountains to the west of our place. There are my old snowshoes...the ones I used when a few of us did a 18.75-mile snowshoe hike in one day many years ago.

There's a collection of old fishing reels on the bookshelf, some belonging to my grandfather. And the bookshelf? Well, let's just say it doesn't contain any Harlequin romance novels. There are books on guns, hunting, fishing, Civil War history, and other "manly" topics.

There are a couple of comfortable rocking chairs by the wood stove that are perfect for reading, chatting, or just sitting and looking into the flames. There's an old farm table on one side of the room with the chess board set up. Of course, there's a little cedar box there, as well, with checkers just in case someone doesn't feel like playing chess. An ancient, handmade Cribbage board resides there, too.

Anyway, that's my room. What about yours? As you can see, it's nothing fancy, but it's a great place for me to relax, read by the fire, or sharpen my knives.

I'd be interested in hearing about your man rooms (or for the women of the forum, your "she sheds":)). Pictures, too, if you have them.

And of course, here's a shot of the "man fridge." I keep it loaded with all sorts of canned soda and frozen Snickers bars. This is probably one of the greatest attractions for the grandkids in the lodge.:D

At onetime I had great man cave. Pool table, pinball machine, stand up video arcade machine, 2 jukeboxes and 3 nickel slot machines. My reloading setup was in separate room. Then after 21 years my wife decided to run off with an alcoholic guy she worked with. Managed to keep 1 slot machine, 1 jukebox and my reloading equipment and guns. I miss not having the other stuff but, not the ex wife. Postscript......about 5 years after our divorce I got some phone calls asking how to get ahold of her. As these were bill collectors I was pleased to give them all the information I could. Karma.

I am in the planning stages of setting one up. Trying to decide if I want to use the basement, which is a semi man cave now with reloading, guns etc. or use a spare bedroom. Ideas are always welcome. Pics even better.

Mule packer that stove is a really nice touch. Nothing beats a nice cozy spot for the favorite beverage and hobby space !

Before I moved to this retirement joint I had a 18 by 20 workshop. About three fourths of it was taken up by a table saw, joiner, big table and other wood working equipment. On one side I had a formica topped bench(10 or 12 feet long) with shelves with doors on either side of where my legs went. All of my reloading stuff was either on it or in the shelves. My press was on a stand where I could have access by swiveling my seat.
I have a big apartment but don't really have a place to feel comfortable even handling gun cleaning stuff.
If you have a man space, keep it as long as you can.

Mule Packer, That's a nice space to relax and enjoy a good read.

I live in my garage. AC and music. Adult beverages are just inside the door to the kitchen.

I'm finally putting up my cabinets out in the garage this week, They're from my old kitchen. Waste not want not.

My last place my cave was out back, I always worried about break ins. This garage is doing the job. Of course it could always be bigger and I almost bought a bigger garage and house but I didn't want to cool two structures.

I had one years ago when we lived in a larger home and had 2 acres. I dont miss the ground and really don’t miss the man cave either.
I have my gun safe in the office and all of my reloading supplies and three presses in the guest bedroom. I have all the wildlife art and other manly decor on the walls in there.
Luckily, the wife respects the no chick stuff rule and we dont have much company that stays past dinner.

Don't forget...

"my room" is decorated with pictures and collectibles of Lithuanian super stars Johnny Unitas and Dick Butkus; memorabilia from old Riverview Park in Chicago and Smith & Wesson patches, buttons, belt buckles, hats, mugs, etc.....

Mike Curtis-the Baltimore Colts.

Relegated myself to outside where I can imbibe, scratch 'n belch, multi task and unwind when needed.
A radio, room for a small screen, seating for several I can be neighborly or pull some shades against the weather or busy beavers.
A couple Weber grills, kitchen a step or two away and a handy backyard for bladder relief I have what I need at hand.

My house is, well, I’m a bachelor, okay? I did condense my photos from fishing tournaments and motorcycle racing and surfing, and an old medal, all into one “I love me” room, but the whole 1500 sq.ft is pretty obvious a mans home.
One bedroom and bath are neutral/ beach style for my daughter when she visits.

The workshop under my garage apt next to my house (a charter fisherman and his wife live upstairs) I share with my tenant and it’s my old Daddy’s gun shop. Table saw, drill press, jointer, grinder/ polisher, versa vice and work bench for maintaining the old mansion.

Plus, my neighbor across the street has a full outdoor commercial kitchen and thirty foot long bench table under a shade roof (the redwood I provided for it) a giant firepit and barbecue pit, full bar, ice machine etc along with all the processing area for deer, hog and fish, so a hundred feet from my back door is the seemingly never ending get together that I can ease into and depart without any hassle at all.

It’s more like an embassy grounds than a man cave.

My garage is my space, but I do share it with my wife's golf clubs and some camping gear. It has a fridge, my laptop, my banjo, my cars, ammo and loading supplies, my gun safes, etc. Its 30 ft from the house so there is a bit of separation. People seem to enjoy hanging out in it, they always find something interesting to occupy themselves. My sons would spend all day here if they could.

Its usually a disaster, I need to clean it up every six months or so as I'm very bad for not putting things away. When I have paths between piles of junk/treasure I know its time.

I used to have a secure room in the basement for guns and stuff but when we had a third kid we needed the room so I got evicted.

That is a nice cosy place I grant you. But I was expecting more guns; knives and maybe even a sword or two.;)
