Learn the lesson of Jamestown
Hello, As a student of history I like to use the lessons of the past and apply them to new situations. The establishment of Jamestown is similar.
Jamestown had an average 50% death rate per year. If someone could possibly be acclimated they might survive a longer period, but would get worn down over time due to disease and malnutrition. Death among the newly arrived would be higher.
The archaeologists have never found the graveyard that would give them many clues to how they lived. The reason is that things got so bad the decomposing bodies were dug up and eaten. That has to give you some insight into how bad it really was.
A well known physicist Michuo Kaku (sp?) predicted a 95% failure rate. I would predict a multi-year effort before the colony reaches survivability. The established -dead-colonists will provide sustenance to the new arrivals.
As at Jamestown, the advertising will boast of the wonderful opportunities and wonderful conditions with no way of actually verifying these facts(lies). More will arrive, then more, till numbers make it viable.
Have a nice day, and welcome to Mars.
