Was cleaning my new to me 639 and was wondering what the “back strap” on these 2nd gen guns is made of. At first I figured aluminum, but the more I look at it I’m guessing maybe a plastic of some kind. I didn’t want to scrape it to find out, so thought I’d ask. Thanks

Don't know specifically about the 639, but the back strap on my 439 is black anodized aluminum.

Ally steel .... I think!!

My Model 639 shipped in June 1983 per Roy Jinks. With the grips off my backstrap appears to be alloy steel of some sort. I did not check for magnetism, nor have I tried to scratch it with something sharp. It does not look like plastic at all.

Maybe Froggie or some of the experts with these 2nd Gen guns will check in and get us a positive answer.

An interesting question. I have six M639's and never really checked the backstraps and always assumed they were also SS. I am away from home and can't currently check them.
