Mauser rifles for defense?

The saying "Run what ya brung" sorta applies here. I know for a fact that several mujahadeens and other "freedom fighters" still carried Mausers, Lee Enfields, and Carcanos while I visited their country! And they weren't to worried about overpenetration either.
Thing is though, if a stray round does (heaven forbid) strike a neighbor your gonna be in deep do-do! So definetly stock up on soft point ammo and know your lanes of fire.
On the plus side at least you'll never be accused of using an evil assault rifle! And I rather like the ability to punch through hard objects to get to the target, theses old rifles can do that I spades! Also others may argue that you won't have as much "firepower" as a modern semi-auto rifle, personally I think a lot of people put way to much stock in having a bucket of bullets hanging off their weapon of choice! Practice with your rifle, know your sights, and your ability to hit at a given range!
And try a Moisin, they ain't half bad.;) Dale

If you go with the 98k for distance shooting i'd go with the 8mm FMJ AP surplus ammo if you can find any. This older ammo will go thru just about anything thats steel too.

For upclose and personal work/protection, when in a defensive mode we still can't beat a short barreled 12ga with "00" buck. I always have my 44 with me anyhoo. Bill

I bought a 98 Mauser and sporterized it. I was planning on putting a new barrel on it, maybe even converting it to a different caliber. We took it to a firing range and it was so accurate we decided there was no need to do anything more to it. My younger son has it now and says he'll never part with it. If you buy one you aren't likely to be disappointed.
