May I say what most of us already know?

Nobody suggested value questions are inappropriate. Just not of great value in the end. Some obviously disagree. OK.

I read the first post and skimmed/read the rest.

I really appreciate your humor and insight.

I don't know. Maybe if we keep this one near the top folks will stop asking about the value of what they purchased...or what they may purchase. Which would clean the board up some I suppose and I can check it once a week or so.. instead of every mornin.

I suggested a separate forum just for valuation questions. Either no one was listening or didnt care.

Great thread. Lots of good debate and points made. The only thing I can possible add is this.
If a new member is posting about a gun he "already purchased" it serves no purpose to tell him he/she is an idiot or DS or DA etc in front of all on the forum. They are probably proud of what they just bought and are just looking for some affirmation. A congratulations or "Nice Pick Up" will keep newer people coming back. The proper thing to do IMO for the sake of teaching is to PM/ email the OP and explain what they might have done differently.
If they haven't purchased it already then it should be out on the forum for many to give advice/opinions.

I think there is also a group on here who get off on ruining other people's good times and purposely post pure B.S.

There are many stand up, decent guys on here. I think that's more the norm, but, there are a few unhappy people who try to ruin your day as well on here.

A great big huge +1.

Wells, let's jest look at this transaction...I purchased a new in the box 4" model 25-5
with the docs and tools at four hundred bucks out the door in the late 70s / early 1980.
Was this a good deal? Not necessarily, I thought I had paid a premium to have one of the first to hit dealer shelves.
I would expect it would bring something north of that today.

In the mid 80s, I bought every 24-3 that came along NIB at $400.00...Is that their worth today?

Bought a RM here a while back, it cost me a couple hundred more that I really wanted to pay for a Registered Magnum.
But, after careful consideration, the low registration number made it more appealing to me and my pocket book.

The long and short of it is, I can make that couple of hundred bucks a hell of a lot faster than I can find another RM in that range that suits me.
As of right now I'm not pricing it at any amount to anyone.

SP, how'd that 25-5 4" of your'n shoot?
Mine didn't shoot worth a damn....

So I guess, I really did pay to much, eh. ;):D

Su Amigo,
Dave

Big thanks......

to Saxon for starting this thread and to everyone who has responded. Agree or disagree with the OP it is still a valid conversation and well worth having. Personally, I enjoy the "what is it worth" threads because often you pick up a little tid bit of info not previously known and often see interesting things.

Thirty years ago I was buying Colts and Smiths based solely on their mechanical condition, in fact the worse the finish the better I liked them, because of their price. I'm sure I've got 20 or so S&W's that SP would not want me to even bring into his house to show him. These guns got stuffed in an old poorly fitting leather or nylon holster, drug thru the briars, sweated on, rained on, and more times than I care to remember dumped in the low country black water creeks when I turned over a canoe or one man boat. In the last 10 years most S&W's I've bought have gone on the wall of my vault, rarely shot and never abused. I enjoy all the "whats it worth" posts, mainly to see the variety of answers. On guns in 90% or less condition, its sure easy to see whether the person furnishing the answer sees it as a tool or a collectible.

If we limit the type of questions new members can ask we are turning them off to gun interest on the forum. Sometimes a new member needs an excuse or reason to join in the discussions and "what's it worth" and "Did I pay too much" post gives them that. I find them interesting and can find no fault with it. Just sayin.....
