What's the story on the brown plastic grips on the M39? Original or aftermarket? I ahve only seen the wood or black plastic on the M39.
Thanks

Is it a Model 39 or 39-2? Can you share the serial number, or at least the range? What do the back side of the grips look like?

Hello Mr. MikeW, the checking pattern follows the wood grips. They are very interesting. I dont have an answer yet. Can you supply a pic of the inside of both grips? It may reveal a mold mark. What is the Sn. range of the 39? Could be a link to the answer. best, Mike

Mike is posting for me. Its serial# A163xxx. I think it's a 72-73 model. I just bought those grips cause it had the rubber pachmayr that I did not like. they said factory but we have never seen them in brown.

Welcome to the forum and thanks for the pictures. Where did you find these grips? When S&W made the suppressed "Hush Puppy" pistols for the Navy SEALs, circa 1969, they used black nylon grips with molded checkering and S&W logo. IOW they looked like the molds had been made from standard wooden grips. Yours are similar buy I don't know why they are brown. Can you tell what kind of material they are? All things considered I think they are after-market and not a S&W product.

I am aware of the Hush Puppy (pretty sweet) and the history surrounding it but thanks for the info. The material feels and looks the same as the material used on my model 59 grips. It is defiantly some sort of plastic material. It has some flex to it. I am not at all removing doubt they may be aftermarket but I was hoping for a unicorn. I purchased them on eBay. The seller bought a big lot of gun items and later sold them on eBay. He did not know the history for we brought it here for the experts to take a peek at. Thanks for all the replies but keep em coming so we can get the the bottom of it.

Hello errwik, thanks for the pic. I dont see one clue as to who made them.
Somebody went to a lot of expense to make the two molds. Im stumped for right now. And welcome to the Forum.

gmborkovic: that is exactly what I was thinking. Y would you make a mold for this color grip?

Do I have the manufacture date correct on my serial number as 1972-1973? I was hoping so as I was born in 72 and really wanted it to be in this range.

A163xxx

What looks like model 59's. There is a model 59 in the first picture and a model 39-2 below that. The grips are definitely not for the model 59 ad the 59 grips have a straight backstrap.
