Measuring Flaky Powders

This thread has had it's moments (funny as hell actually) but I
fail to see the hysteria. My Redding #3 measures Unique +/-
.1 grain with the pistol micrometer as checked with a modern
digital scale. I measure 10 shots before charging the cases and
once they settle down I measure every 5th one. They are always
within .1 gr. The loads I am talking about are 6 to 10 grains in
44 cases.
I am moving to Universal as a substitute not because of metering
but because it's so much cleaner. Unique, unless it's at full pressure,
is a dirty bird.
That said, I have loaded thousands of rounds with Unique and
will continue to do so until I run out. That may take awhile :)
Why? It works!

I use a 1975 RCBS powder measure and the biggest variation I get is .2 tenths.

Granted, they don't run off of static electricity, but any sparks generated still aren't going to do anything to the powder or yourself. So, what's the concern? The pump mounted on the plastic hopper is a viable way to circumvent the propensity of Unique to bridge and it's safe.

I have no concern cause it ain't gonna happen.;)

Perhaps the immersion blender from the kitchen or another item not to be mentioned may work.:)

I do a lot of electrical work in classified areas at a aerosol spray facility.

In some areas, long before the safe electrical stuff we have now, they would use pneumatic controls for these areas. If the danger of electrical spark scares you, look at this:
industrial linear vibrators, nts 120-350 non-impacting linear vibrators

Then, all you would have to do is run an air line to your compressor, make a pneumatic switch on the up stroke of the press, shake the hopper for a few seconds and VIOLA! Safe metering of those hard to meter powders! haha

Or, go here and look at those cute little pumps! Really, they look sealed! The smallest one would work. Something for a 5-10gal aquarium, less than $8! I'm buying one just to try!

It looks like maybe I might actually be able to carry a gun up there soon.

My application for CCW is in the mail.
It certainly is culture shock for the commies up here:)
I work at the U. Much teeth nashing and hair pulling. It's
hilarious.

I lived up in Mad City for a bit. Met my wife up there. My sister went to UW. Still have relatives there. The only two states I visit that I can not carry. MN and WI.

Have to see if the new National reciprocity carry thing makes it to the Senate.

That's looking good along with the fact that Wisconsin is recognizing
most every out of state permit. I don't see Florida on the list
but a couple dozen others.

WI Department of Justice - Law Enforcement Services

Under the reciprocity section.
No Florida is not on there. Probably due to the fact that our NCIS check is through the FDLE (Florida Dept LE) and not direct to the FBI even though it is the same data base as far as I know. Also, as WI has not CCW we can not honor it here in Fl which honors almost everyone else.

As of Nov 1st we DO have CCW. Or at least the ability to apply
for a permit. It's going to take a few months but by spring many
thousands of us will be carrying.

If same sex marriages have to be recognized in states that don't enact legislation against it, any license should also be recognized by each state, unless there is specific legislation that prevents it.

Well then there needs to be a new organization ,The National Association for the Advancement of Gays with Guns.

The NAAGWG will certainly get the bill passed.;)

I've never used Unique, but I've loaded ponuds and pounds of Clays in 9mm, .38 Special, .44 Special and .45 ACP using a Lee Perfect Powder Measure. (and dipper too for that matter) Here's how I do it with all powders:

Adjust the measure to approximately where I think it will need to be. Drop a charge and weigh it. Adjust as needed. Once I get close I'll weigh a few charges between adjsutments just to check the varaition. Once satisfied, I'll weigh 5 consecutive charges. If still satisfied I'll start loading, weighing a charge every now and then to make sure everything is ok. (I don't see how a Lee PPM could get out of adjsutment on its own, however)

With flak powders I don't see more than a 0.2 varaition. With other powders I typically see 0.1 and as little as .05.

We started with methods of adjusting for flaky powders which worked for a while before veering off into aquarium pumps, female fun, CC reciprocity, and same-sex marriage, to name a few. Was that a pregnant thread, or what? Thanks, J.W. for getting back on track with your thoughtful post. My experiences with the Lee Perfect measure are similar.:p

Now I do believe I apologized and tried to get it back on track. The question was pretty much asked and answered. How far does it need to continue?

I use the Lee Pro Disc and Unique for some loads. Measure and check however is best for you. A flake powder like Unique or Blue Dot is always going to be more difficult in a volumetric measure than a finer powder. As I mentioned before (somewhere) that is not going to change. The only truly exact method is to weigh each and every load which of course most folks do not want to do for handguns.

When I load rifles as there is only a small number, each gets weighed.
