MEMES

1st row right, bass mandolin and how does one know if a banjo is out of tune?

Any time you can hear it.:D

I shouldn't really rag on the banjo. The last band I played in had a number where the lead guitarist played a banjo in the intro. It was to set the scene of men in the trenches in WWI. It got the audience's attention in a good way. Comment afterwards was "Hey, that was different, didn't expect a banjo in a NWOBHM band".

I have heard every musician joke there is. Both good and bad. It's all in fun.

I sold a lot of high end banjos and know a bit about them. I knew enough banjo tunes to be able to demo them and do last minute fill in gigs.

Every instrument has its place.

It's just that some of them should be placed in the next room.

IMO anyone who rags on the banjo has never heard a REALLY good banjo player do his stuff.

If you want to see some excellent banjo pickin' do a Google search for "Roy Clark banjo" and watch a few YouTube videos.

The banjo is a modern instrument with roots in African music. It was imported to America via the slave trade, and over time the original 4-string banjo was modified to include a tambourine/drumhead style body, and a fifth string. Those two features of the modern banjo make it one of the very few uniquely American instruments.
