True story: A friend of mine put carpeting in his house and was trimming the bottoms of the doors because the carpet and padding were much higher than the old wood floors. His son was helping, bringing out the doors, then taking them back in. The son brought one door back out a second time and said it was still dragging on the carpet. My friend had been taking about 3/8 of an inch off, so he ripped off another 3/8 and his son returned again with the same door and said it was still dragging. His father let out a string of curse words and took the door back in the house. He found his son was right, the door was still dragging - because he had been cutting the top - which now had a rather unsightly 3/4 gap at the top.
The cursing really took off then.
