Eugene “Mercury” Morris has passed at the age of 77. To me, he was a childhood icon, along with Earl Morrall, Bob Griese, Larry Csonka, Larry Little, Paul Warfield and many others of the 1972 undefeated team and the two bank to back Superbowls. I was a youngster living in Southwest Miami at the time, and all of my friends and I were enthralled by the team. R.I.P. Mister Morris, you are legendary!

I grew up a half hour bike ride from the training camp at the old Biscayne College and try to get there in the few weeks before school started. Learned to recognize players without their gear and would try to say hello. Eugene Morris was, to say it politely mercurial. He was either your best bud or looked like he would enjoy throwing a kid over a building. Figured out later that the majority of players back then were working stiffs, most had second jobs along with the good days and bad. Having crossed Shula a couple times Even my 11-12 year old self understood.
Great talent and a good, sometimes grumpy dude I sad to hear of his passing.

That was the era that Chuck Noll put together one of the best teams in NFL history. They would've had 6 in a row had they been able to stay healthy.
I haven't heard the name Mercury Morris in years. These teams now days could never compete with those real footballers. RIP Mr. Morris.

What a great team!!

Heck Larry Csonka could just fall down forward and gain 10 yards!:D

Who can remember the famous Garo Yepremian pass in the Super Bowl against Washington in 1973. For a second I thought they would blow the perfect season. I was 17 years old and getting ready to graduate from High School. The 72-73 season watching Miami was magical. The Saints???? Meh not so much......

I think we can all agree the NFLs best team and best player both reside in Buffalo NY currently.

I missed most of their best two seasons, due to spending time in the Far East on Uncle's dime. RIP Mr. Morris!

I never thought about it before,,
I missed the same time while on a ship,,,,,,,,,,,
We did not even get radio signal,, let alone TV,,

Sometimes we would go for weeks only able to receive "short wave" radio signals,,

They came only from Europe,, so no USA football.

We would find out football scores, 6 weeks after the game.
That was from a newspaper someone would get mailed to them from "home".

I never really understood how somebody who made as much money as he did had to get involved in selling drugs. He seemed to have everything going for him.

What does that have to do with Mr. Morris passing.

Because the Miami Dolphins used to own the Buffalo Bills. Morris was part of it. The Bills recently beat the daylights out of Miami. It was a reference for football historians.
