About a month ago I came across this thread on another forum where a fellow shooter documents putting over 5000 rounds through his 642 over the last couple of years. It is his main CCW these days. Long story short, the gun has performed flawlessly and looks and works like new. The only problem with this thread, it's costing me a small fortune...

Here is the thread:
Project: Break my J frame.

Three weeks ago it inspired me to pick up my third J Frame...the 442 in the group shot below (bottom left).

Yesterday it inspired me to pick up my 4th! I got this barely used 638 for $300 delivered on GB. It arrives tomorrow.

I need to decide which grips to put on it? These are the two frontrunners from my J Frame grip collection that is filling up one of my draws. Rubber is a no-no for my CCW guns, they stick to my shirt and expose the piece.

So far this thread has cost me $657 for the two guns (+ two $35 transfer fees), plus all the 38 spec ammo I have been shooting the last month.

On the upside, I am getting damn good with my little snubbies. At 15 yards I can generally keep all the rounds I send downrange in a fist-sized group. I find shooting standard pressure ammo is pretty painless. I can put a 100 rounds through my J Frames in a session with no ill effects. I have shot about 500 rounds of standard pressure and +P ammo out of my snubbies the last few weeks. It is getting expensive! I really wish 38 ammo was a bit cheaper. I have been paying about $16-$18 for a box of 50 lately. And that's cheap for 38 ammo these days!

I just picked up a 442 like new, might not have ever been fired for $299. Put a set of those Altamont rubber and wood grips on it(after your recommendation), and an Apex trigger kit. I love it!

I would have a hard time saying no to a 438 if one crossed my path.

That Apex kit makes a big difference! Surprisingly easy to install as well.

I have a lot of $ in my 2 jframes. A 340pd & a 337ti (both no ILS & nib) but to me money well spent. I have the 340pd with me all day at work. I practice at 15 to 21 feet with mine. 15 yards is too far for me to see at the indoor range.

You think ammo is expensive? Try gambling! If you patronize one LGS, you might be able to get a case price for ammo. I do, and it saves me quite a bit. If you're shooting extensively, and with a bunch of Js, you will be, it doesn't pay to buy ammo a box or 2 at a time. Case pricing is the way to go.

This. Or roll your own.

Nice story. So what is next? :)

I'm thinking a 640 Pro Series. But will consider a 60 2" in 357, a regular 640 in 357, or even a 649 in 357. See the common theme...all steel. The 640 Pro Series is the coolest of all of these because of the low profile night sights. It also looks the best, with its fluted barrel. Kentucky Gun Co has them for $599 delivered today :) But I need to resist. My wife and I have a baby coming in the next few days!

Today I gave my J Frames a rest and I'm actually carrying a Glock 19. I never thought I would carry such a large piece, I usually carry a 9mm Shield when I carry a semi, but a light and thin kydex holster arrived yesterday for the G19. I'm surprised how easy it is to carry, even wearing shorts and a tee shirt. So I might need another 19, this time in FDE. Clearly one Black G 19 isn't enough. I have a Gen 4 Glock 17 in FDE (see below) with a threaded barrel and love how it looks and shoots. And that rifle below is off being cerakoted in Patriot Brown right now, along with the Samson Extended Evo rail not pictured. The FDE Glock is actually Patriot Brown to my eyes, though they call it FDE. See it compared to the Magpul FDE furniture below.

Never ends...

Oh great you've just provided the perfect opening for yet another rambling treatise on the merits of J frame snubs from Kaaskop49...

I'm surprised I can even find the time to submit "another rambling treatise." The casinos here are open 24/7 and so are the world financial markets!

b san: Sincerely appreciate your kind words. At least I think they're kind... aren't they?

Well I was a little disappointed you missed them the 1st time and then your post didn't even address the glory of the J frame snub! but rambled on about ammo... ugh

Just poking fun, I quite enjoy your loquacious dissertations on the often underrated J frame snub. :D
