About a month ago I came across this thread on another forum where a fellow shooter documents putting over 5000 rounds through his 642 over the last couple of years. It is his main CCW these days. Long story short, the gun has performed flawlessly and looks and works like new. The only problem with this thread, it's costing me a small fortune...
Here is the thread:
Project: Break my J frame.
Three weeks ago it inspired me to pick up my third J Frame...the 442 in the group shot below (bottom left).
Yesterday it inspired me to pick up my 4th! I got this barely used 638 for $300 delivered on GB. It arrives tomorrow.
I need to decide which grips to put on it? These are the two frontrunners from my J Frame grip collection that is filling up one of my draws. Rubber is a no-no for my CCW guns, they stick to my shirt and expose the piece.
So far this thread has cost me $657 for the two guns (+ two $35 transfer fees), plus all the 38 spec ammo I have been shooting the last month.
On the upside, I am getting damn good with my little snubbies. At 15 yards I can generally keep all the rounds I send downrange in a fist-sized group. I find shooting standard pressure ammo is pretty painless. I can put a 100 rounds through my J Frames in a session with no ill effects. I have shot about 500 rounds of standard pressure and +P ammo out of my snubbies the last few weeks. It is getting expensive! I really wish 38 ammo was a bit cheaper. I have been paying about $16-$18 for a box of 50 lately. And that's cheap for 38 ammo these days!
