Thank you for contacting me with your thoughts on our nation's gun policy. I appreciate hearing from you and knowing your position. I will be sure to keep your opinions in mind should any legislation on the topic come before the House.
I support the Second Amendment to the Constitution's guarantee that all Americans have the right to bear arms.
"A well-regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms shall not be infringed."
It is important to remember that approximately one third of American households own at least one gun, and the vast majority of those households are made up of law-abiding citizens. We need to do a better job enforcing the gun laws we already have on the books and closing loopholes. For example,background checks for gun purchases should be completed for all sales, guns should be properly licensed and secured, and weapons need to be kept out of the hands of violent offenders. We also need to increase access to mental health services and provide our schools with more resources to help make them safer.
We must do all we can to stop tragedies like those that occurred in Aurora, Colorado; Sandy Hook, Connecticut; Webster, New York; and the everyday violence that plagues communities across our country.
