mid power 357 load

I came across a box of 400 158 grain hard cast lswc at a reloading store the other day and have been thinking they'd go well with 5 grains of 231 in a 357 case for my k magums. whats everyones favorite loads for their 19's and 66's

I agree with your thinking, but I use 5.5 grains, which runs about 985 FPS in my 686 Mountain Gun. It is more accurate than I am and is enjoyable to shoot. I have used that load with a couple of different cast bullets, good results with all. I’m not sure where loading manuals stand with 5.5 grains, so research accordingly. I’ve used it for years with no problems.

6.0 grs - Unique ... for years.

6.5 grs to 7.0 grs - AA#5 ... lately !

Unique may be hard to find ... I find AA#5 just a tad slower ...
but at these pressures , cleah burning and easier measuring / metering than Unique .
I'm starting to like AA#5 for 357 Cast Bullet - starting and mid range loads .
I will use Unique whenever I can ... our love affair goes back to 1967 ... too versatile a powder to abandon !

Should be a good plinking/range load. 38spl p+ territory is 5.0gr/5.2gr with +/- 158gr cast bullets.

Myself, I use 5.5gr or 6.0gr (when I want a little hotter/harder hitting bullet) of bullseye for a blammo ammo load in the 357mags. Playing around shooting targets @ 50yds using 2 different bullets and 5.5gr and 6.0gr loads of bullseye.

The bullets used were the cramer "hunter" bullet, a 158gr rn hp. Bottom row center bullet. The other bullet (top row 2nd from left/green bullet) is a Mihec 640 deries 158gr fn hp.

Glad to see shooters are looking for light/accurate loads for the 357mags.

I need something to fill the gap between my 700fps target loads and my "hunting" load thats a 158 grain xtp over 16 grains of h110

A. Decide how fast you want those 158s to go.
B. Chrono your loads.
C. Adjust the powder charge until you achieve that velocity.

*You need a chronograph to get dialed in. What other guys are doing, might get you in the ballpark.
Their scale may read differently.
Their powder lot may be different.
Their bullets may be different.
Their dies may be different, and produce different neck tension.
Their gun is certainly different.

158 CSWC using 5.5 gr Unique. As always, work up the load for safety, even “midrange “

just use the speer website data sheet.. sure you gotta be careful on using their swagged bullets, or getting something similar.. BUT their data barely gets over 1,000 fps

Sierra's website has about 20 or so different powders and various velocities obtained .

Have you had a chance to chronograph that 5.4 231 load yet?
Just starting to develop loads for a new 586. Mostly working with 125 gr.
Did try a starter load of4.4gr. 231 under a 158 LRNFP. 820 FPS 23 SD 129.6 PF.
I'll give the 5.4 a test with the next batch in the next few days.
