You're relatively new so I'll clue you in .....Midway's shipping charges have been discussed in length on this forum and as far as I can tell there is 2 schools of thought.
1: Sees no problem with the shipping charges and add on's and believe that Larry offers a superior selection and service and can charge what ever he deems fit and fair. Don't like it...don't buy.
2: Argues that Midway's competition sees a way to reduce shipping charges and passes it on to the consumer but is frequently lesser in selection and a bit higher in price.
You,as I, have to choose which opinion we agree with and can abide by...
Personally I see Midway as a store for the well off where a few dollars more in shipping is of no consequence in the grand scheme of things and that's fine in my book but I hopefully have a long road ahead and to afford my expensive hobby, I will seek out a honest bargain every time whether it be in merchandise or shipping.
I refuse to give Midway another dime but they will thrive simply because of a new echelon of shooter who believes convenience trumps cost and their established customers of fat pensions and wallets.

I've noticed that with ammo. They put a one box limit on .22 ammo and then charge $20+ to ship it. Makes no sense.
I bought some re-loading stuff the other day, and their shipping seemed in line. They also had $20 off of a $100 purchase for Black Friday.
I bought six boxes of Automatch .22 ammo on Gunbroker today. lt was $30 per box (325 rounds per box), but the guy would combine orders and ship it all for $20. Also bought five boxes of Winchester Super X .22lr from the same guy. I know I paid a premium, but I just can't find .22lr around here. He was the cheapest guy on Gunbroker.

Ups charges a $10 hazmat charge on ammo so I don't think the shipping is out of line. The one box limit makes it tough unless you need other stuff.
Zip code makes a difference too, my last order was around $20 to home but only $15 shipped to work in a less rural area.

To my knowledge there is no hazmat fee accessed on ammo. The packaged is marked ORM-D and sent by ground. Hazmat fee is for primers and powder.

Quit fooling around with a half brick of ammo. Midway will ship a case of 5000 to my door for $21.24.

Don't just buy one brick of ammo.
If I plan on picking up 22lr from a site like MidwayUSA, I'll always keep a few items in my cart that I want. It definitely makes a difference.
Besides the fee for orders under $25, their shipping hasn't changed that much over the years.

Shipping and hazmat are only expensive when you order small quantities. I order most of my components from Powder Valley. I don't order one or two pounds of powder. I always order at least 16 pounds, mix or match is ok, and 5,000 to 10,000 primers all on the same order. Same thing for ammo, which the only ammo I would order would be shotgun or 22RF. That way you are stocked up for awhile and the hazmat and shipping doesn't hurt as much. It is a waste of time and money to order little dribs and drabs at a time.

Currently I have two orders being processed one about $125. (Shipping $4.34,) the other $350...(shipping $10.40). Certainly not unreasonable and the service and availability of merchandise is far higher than the norm. Unfortunately it is easier to rally the negative than the good.
It's the one brick limit that creates this problem. Midway is one of the only companys I know of that hasn't gouged their customers in the last year.
Like others have stated, it is way more economical to buy by the case

Cabelas is about the only place I know that ships very cheap.
Almost everywhere else its at least $15 shipping for one brick.

I always thought Midway was OK on shipping charges. I always chose the cheapest option. The options for ammo are limited though. So, I went to Midways site and plugged some numbers in.
1 box of 50 .22lr to my door is $18.90 with a 3.99 handling fee. 10 boxes is $19.30 with no handling fee. 40 boxes is 20.50. These are shipping charges only.
20 bucks shipping for 4 bricks of .22 sounds like a deal to me. If I can't buy enough to make it worthwhile, I do without, add other stuff to the order or pay LGS prices. It's no different than buying anything else online.

Wrong. UPS does have minimum charges to ship a package, but they do not have a flat hazmat fee. Ammo bought online and shipped almost always has to be bought in substantial quantities to make the purchase economically smart, and can be smart to buy (in quantity), especially when you factor in the lack of sales tax and the fact that many local brick-n-mortar stores don't have what you want. Midway has been more than reasonable through the crazy days, has a huge inventory of things shooters need, ships extremely quickly, takes returns graciously, often offers discount codes that often equate to free shipping, and has donated incredible amounts of money to the NRA. I am not well-off or independently wealthy, but I will be a Midway customer for life.

I've been buying from them since the mid-80s and will keep buying from them. As others have said, you buy ammo a brick at a time and you will pay through the nose for shipping from ANYONE!

Agree 100% however, that being said, how often has anyone been able to buy case lots of ammo from any of these retailers? Seems to me, all they offer is bricks... if even that. So when buying bricks, I too think Midway is way high on shipping and would rather use Cabelas. Their shipping is more reasonable. I do like Midway & will continue to purchase from them as warranted.
Under these current buying conditions, I personally have found I get my best overall price from Gunbroker, where I can buy by the case and get real cheap freight. Sure, some of the ammo is outrageous, but if you keep an eye out, you can find decent overall pricing. Heck, I saw a link this am on the ammo thread offering CCI Standard Velocity from a retailer for boxes of 50 for more per unit than I paid on Gunbroker... and I got a case of 5000 there.

I buy ammo on line by the case and Cabela's,Aim Surplus and Palmetto all offer me a fair price both in merchandise and shipping....using my Cabela's card.. even free shipping.
With a little patience and some time I can best Midway's prices almost every time.
Again it usually comes down to convenience which in the case of Midway means you just have to spend more.
