Mini Rant....Why Must People....

I had someone try and pull a similar stunt on me today. Was on the interstate and had a truck passing me on the left. Apparently the car behind him wasn't happy with how fast he was passing and he tried to merge back over into my lane before he was around me -- forcing me to hit the brakes and shift right to the rumble strip. I honked and gave my single digit salute, to which this person became a traffic weaver with several more close calls as he worked his way down the interstate. The sort of person who you hope winds up in a ditch but doesn't take anyone else with them; but usually just causes a crash and accidents for others and gets away clean.

I call it the "hooray for me and screw you" syndrome. Lot's of that going around these days. Men and women. Texas once touted "drive friendly". It didn't take.

It's more fun in the winter months, especially during a heavy snow fall...Then watch the get home itis'ers, when you catch up and they're either in the center median or off to the side. That's when it's nice to just wave as you go by.

I ain't going to stop for them, I don't give a darn, how cold and miserable it is out.

WuzzFuzz that's just COLD!

The clown in the OP's post was clearly that; a clown.

Just FYI; I was driving in Germany one time and hit construction on the autobahn. Stay with me here...

Now get this: they actually LET EACH OTHER OVER!!! Guess what, NO SLOWDOWN. It was totally bizarre! Turns out, if everybody 'drives nice', traffic doesn't stop for a lane closure.

That traffic engineer is relying on the average driver to do the right thing as described by you in my first highlight. This statement by the traffic guy is why he should be fired immediately. The first rule of traffic engineering is never, I say NEVER, trust the average driver to do the right thing. Add in what needs to be done to control the behaviour in the second highlight and you know the guy has no clue.

I see it as the same principle as how a 4-way stop works. Admittedly, there are people out there who mess that up, but for the most part, 4-way stops work pretty well because most people cooperate.

I did that to a guy who hauled past me on a UK motorway off-ramp. It had just rained for the first time in a while and I knew the road would be slick, so when I hit the ramp I simply backed off the throttle rather than pounding up the ramp and hitting the brakes at the roundabout at the top.

Not good enough for this guy. He comes barrelling past at full motorway speed on the passenger side shaking his fist and THEN spots the car stopped at the top waiting to get onto the roundabout. He stands on the brakes and slides straight into the back of the waiting vehicle. Ahh, the days before ABS. He must of slid a good 30-40 yards. Had he pumped the brakes he had lots of space to cut back into my lane, but he wasn't that good a driver. I waved and smiled as I passed by and gave my details to the cops at the next phone box (pre-cell days) in case they wanted a witness.:D Oddly enough I was never called.

They do that because they're lazy, stupid, fail to plan ahead, and/or distracted. They do not take responsibility for their driving and have no interest in driving such that other drivers are not annoyed or placed in danger. I, of course, do this all the time.

That's because German drivers are trained to leave gaps between themselves and the car in front. Many in the US suffer from Asphalt Agoraphobia (AA), the morbid dread of more than 12 feet of empty road surface in front of them. Apparently AA sufferers are convinced that if they allow too much space between themselves and the car in front, the road will rear up and eat them. This leads to speeding being described as "keeping up with traffic" and changing lanes to fill the spaces left by people who don't realise how dangerous it is to leave a space.

AA is a serious problem and those afflicted are convinced they are right. When I travel on I-15 I travel at my own speed preferably 400 yards or more behind the vehicle in front, I am frequently passed by AA sufferers who shake their heads with sad faces, clearly convinced that the road will get me soon.

Had some genius tailgate me when heading up to the Delaware Water Gap bridge on my way to the Poconos. Yelling and screaming for about 5 miles. Well he made it to the bridge all right. Rear ended another car and from the looks of things his car was a basket case. Down here during sugar cane harvest time you really have to stay on your toes. Tractor hauled cane carts only go so fast. So it's not uncommon to have a conga line of cars following them. But there is always some fool who will try and pass everyone in the line. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. The semi tractor hauled cane trucks you really have to watch out as I think they are paid by how many loads they haul. Almost got run off the road by one as he had pulled into the oncoming traffic with vehicles headed his way. Stay safe. Frank

Yup. The merge works best if you fill up both lanes up to the merge point, then take turns nicely like they taught you in kiddiegarter. MN DOT has been posting signs to this effect and trying to educate the motoring public, but the responses to this thread demonstrate how much ignorance still remains.

My rant goes to the self-appointed traffic monitors (truckers are the worst) who stick themselves out in the clear lane and block off half a mile or more of roadway that could be accommodating more vehicles. I would favor yanking the CDLs of truckers who engage in this passive-aggressive form of road rage. They are supposed to be professionals, but a lot of them act like spoiled kids.

Usually when people cut me off or pull out in front of me I check and more often than not they're got their head glued to their cell phone or are doing other things rather than drive.

The special case was the person next to me a few months ago with a coffee cup in one hand, a book in the other, and I have no idea what they were doing to steer the car!

I think our country has a lot of problems that other ones don't. One reason "zippering" or what ever it is called doesn't work to well in most places here.

There are more polite and courteous truckers than people think. What pisses them off is being cut off and people not using turning signals. Its important to remember that a truck driver is going through more BS from traffic in a day then most people do in a year. When people mess up in from of a semi theres a good possibility the results could be fatal. And thats hard on the truck driver. I know 2 of them who have killed people where the blame was 100% on the person in the car.

But they ARE bigger and they DO run the road. So letting them go where they please is wise : p
