When I rode my motorcycle I kept it a tad faster than the speed of the day which varied between 75 to 90mph. I had to stay ahead of the cars. Till the blue lights came on in the rear view then it was warp drive.

The special case was the person next to me a few months ago with a coffee cup in one hand, a book in the other, and I have no idea what they were doing to steer the car!

And you don't want to know.

Many in the US suffer from Asphalt Agoraphobia (AA), the morbid dread of more than 12 feet of empty road surface in front of them. Apparently AA sufferers are convinced that if they allow too much space between themselves and the car in front, the road will rear up and eat them.

Those people trigger my AF--anal fibrillation.

There's actual merit to the late merge theory, as explained in some book I read awhile back, examining traffic flow dynamics, but, the theory is thwarted by drivers who aren't playing nice, and simply trying to take advantage of others, or, more commonly, are dangerously incompetent, and not looking much farther ahead than where hood ornaments once were. These myopic drivers scare me more than the aggressive jerks who try to bully their way into line. I've noted over the years that almost everybody, however aggressive, will play "chicken" right up to the point of sustaining damage, but then back off --- that's my "theory", so far, not disproven...
