I just got a new to me Smith and Wesson model 624 with 6 1/2 barrel. When I look it over, I found serial number AHB8336 on the butt and serial number AHB8337 above the model information on the yoke. A very close inspection shows both numbers are first strike on undisturbed metal.

I emailed S&W as to which one was the offical serial number and was told the offical serial number is on the butt. They didn't say why there was a wrong serial number on the yoke but they did offer to fix it a no cost to me.

Since my paper work was done under the yoke number I had to go back to my FFL guy, show him the mismatched serial numbers and have him redo the paper work using the butt serial number.

Now I have some questions:
Is this going come back and cause me problems?
Does this increase or decrease the value?
Should I take S&W up on their kind offer to correct the wrong serial number under the yoke?

I had a 629 with this same issue also. As with anything with human involvement, mistakes do happen. Since S&W offered to fix it, I would go that route. It doesn't have any bearing on the value plus or minus.

You need to send it back to S&W to check and see if it's one of the recall guns.I have 624 ahb40xx and they want to check it.The only bad side is if it's a bad gun they will keep it or so I've been told.
