Anything you can tell me about this gun? It caught my eye at Cabelas. Ser no. D328263. I did not get a chance to get it out of the display case. The place was mobbed. I will go back on a weekday morning when hardly anyone is there. I suspect there is another screw head underneath the grip.

Peter, Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson shows D90001-D330000 as 1969-70 so D328263 probably 1970. If mechanical condition is good that is a good price. Definitely worth a second look.

Yes, the magnas cover one screw.

Indeed, if the mechanics match the external appearance, for that condition, it's an excellent price, especially for Cabela's, which is not famous for "great deals" :)

Thanks. I'll definitely get a better look at it. They also have a Colt that looks interesting. But I have to remember not to go there on weekends (LOL)

If you want another look at that price, you'd better hurry, and bring your checkbook. It may already be gone.

I'll echo what others have said: For Cabela's, that is an outstanding price, and really a good price anywhere for a solid, standard barreled model 10. If that gun was at the Cabela's near where I live, it would be priced $200 higher.

I am liking that model 10 a lot a lot...but I think your not ready for it. Model 10s don't compare to Colts :)

What's that on the front sight, whiteout? Probably easy to remove if you don't like it.

I would go back ready to buy but NOT committed to buy. (IE, you don't want to go there with the idea in your head that you've already bought it).

You definitely want to look at the other side and see if it is just as nice. Gun stores often display a gun best side up. Also, my understanding is that now Cabelas will not remove the trigger lock so you just have to inspect it the best you can. I hope I am wrong but if that is the case be sure you get a guarantee that it is in good working order and will shoot or you get your money back.

Assuming proper function and no evidence of alteration - just honest use (the front sight is likely something that can be scrubbed off - I would buy it, but then again I like Model 10s.

If you do not like the nostalgia of a weapon that was standard for defense in the post WW2 period, then pass as no price is low enough for someone who does not appreciate the weapon.

Perhaps this will get you "in the mood:"

According to my database it most likely shipped Jan 1971. Hope it's still there when you go back. That's a deal for Cabela's! :D

300 bucks? Would bring it home for sure ( even though I miss the what seem like not to distant past when these were easy to pick up for well under 200 bucks)

Cabela's new rules

I got the following information after discussing the trigger locks (on all long guns too!) situation with the Gun Library Manager at a Cabela's in my area.

Not only will they NOT remove the trigger lock at any time for you to inspect, it will not even be removed AFTER you pay. After you pay and fill out all paperwork the weapon is secured within a large manila envelope, wrapped with Cabela's label tape, and you are handed two (2) "keys" to the trigger lock.

Once you have exited the store, I assume you are free to open the envelope, unlock the trigger guard, check the bore, check for end shake, and push off, etc. BUT.....here is the rub to me:

One of the extra pieces of paperwork (not Fed, not State) is supposedly a page you sign that you acknowledge the firearm is sold as is...no warranty of any sort, no buy back at all. The wording is that if something is wrong, Cabela's will attempt to locate a gunsmith that you can deal with privately to repair the firearm.

Granted I have NOT personally seen this form, but the very nature of not being able to perform basic checks of any firearm, and then to be told it cannot be checked until after purchase and leaving premises is just so foreign to me that I'm not going into a Cabela's in the future.

IF...the form as described above is true and accurate, then to me it is worse than Internet buys with zero recourse to the buyer. Again...the description of the form and the wording came from a Manager at one stores Gun Library, but I haven't seen the actual form.

Maybe some Forum members can chime in and tell if they have recently purchased any firearm from Cabela's and found this to be true.
