Mod. 10 with a CPD stamp ?

I just put a S&W Mod. 10 on holed at a local gun shop till I can pay it off .
It's in good shape and has a 2" barrel with authentic " real " stag grip's . On the left side of the frame just aft of the cylinder and down it has a stamp about the size of a paper hole punch . The stamp is of the letter's CPD surrounded by a circle , CPD is what is forming the circle . The guy's at the gun store think this may be a stamp for the Chicago police department .
I looked on the net. and googled and found a guy who described the same CPD circle on his Thompson submachine gun that supposedly came from the Joliet State Prison just out side Chicago .
Can anyone here help me fined out what this stamp is all about ?

Hi Gary, welcome to the class weapons forum. The Chicago PD never stamped any handguns except "loaner guns" which were issued when a cops gun was inventoried or broken, and most of them were not marked. All of them, right up to right now, were personally purchased and owned. The CPD stamp did not come from any Illinois Corrections agency. All their weapons were state issued and bore the stamp IDC, or ILDC, if they were marked at all. Illinois State Police weapons (long guns) were marked ISP or Illinois State Police with an inventory number different from the serial number. Many of the state issued handguns were stamped, but not all IIRC, the first state police issued handgun was the S&W M39 issued in 1967. Prior to that I believe the troopers bought their own weapons which were Colt or S&W .357s in 4 or 5 inch barrels.

The Cleveland Police Department had an identical stamp on all it's issued revolvers. My model 10 HB that I bought when we transitioned to the S&W 5903 in August of 1989 has this stamp. Our 5903/6906's had 'CLVLNDOHPD' on the top of the frame on the right side of the gun, also.
Now CPD carries Glock 17/19's. I'm long gone (1994.)

Well then this sounds like a Clevland Police Department weapon .
We figured that it was a stamp from some Police deparment somewhere . Thank you all for the info .
I can't wait to get it . I just love old used gun's . I fined them to be mysteries and they just ooze character like they are old souls .
I think I'm going to have a good time on this forum .

Nice gun! On another note, I bought a NIB Glock 17 with "CLVLNDOHPD" on the slide. I also once put a deposit down on a 2 inch Model 64 with "CPD" and a very long inventory number on the right sideplate. It got sold out from under me (someone offered more than asking price) and I felt it may have been a Chicago Police gun.

I don't remember it having a inventory number on it . And I hopr they still hold it for me . I can't get it for another week and a half .

Dave, on my way back from training I stopped at Fin Feather and Fur in Ashland OH about 5 years ago. Spotted in the case was a S&W M&P with a five inch pencil barrel and a CPD stamp. The backstrap is also marked "#153 C.P.D." They had $150.00 on it and with a police discount I got it for $135.00. Not sure if it was a Cleveland PD gun I took it to the CPD range and they looked up the serial number for me. It was issued originally on 6-27-43 to badge # 153, Jacob Morell. It looks like it was re-issued to Ernest Schemmel, also badge 153, in 1944 through 1977! Man, if that gun could talk! Then the City sold it in 1984 to Fantastic Research. After I got the gun I looked up Schemmel and located his brother. I explained that I had his brother's duty gun and was willing to sell it to the family for what I paid if they were interested. I never got a call, so it lives in my safe. I am glad you kept yours and I regret not buying my first issued model 10. Scary Gary, if you do get that gun I can try to have the serial number checked with CPD records. If you'd like, PM the information to me.

That is so cool . That is exactly what the stamp look's like . And yes I would like to know all about this snubby 10 . I'm going to call them tomorrow if I can remember and make sure that they are still holding it for me . This is all so very exciting . I love this crap .

Are they numbered to it, and what is the serial number range of the gun?

I saw one in a shop with that same stamp on it a while back...I think the serial number was in the S910xxx range and it still had a larger (not pre-war style though) ejector "knob" on it. The "CPD" was what caught my eye.
I can't remember if it was a 4" or 5" barrel, but I remember that the grips were fairly rough on it, and for $499 the shop will probably have it for a while.

CPD M&P photos

Here are some photos of the M&P I posted about yesterday. Even though the gun was made before 1961 the reason I am posting here is to help verify the CPD stamp. I think I am also going to post photos in the pre-1961 section also.

Here is a close-up of the CPD stamp right behind the S&W logo.

And finally, the backstrap marked No. 153 CPD. The photo is not the greatest. The officers issued this weapon (there were two) both had badge # 153. The grips are too nice IMO to be the originals, especially after 33 years of service, but they are nice period grips.

There is another CPD stamp on the butt next to the serial number, but it is so light I doubt I could get it to show in a photo.

Well all !
I picked it up today and my 10 year old boy and I took it out to do some shooting with it . I was shocked at how accurate it was . The recoil was very manageable and a joy to shoot . Only one problem . It would only discharge a round 2 in 5 or 3 in 5 time's you would drop the hammer . Other then that I loved it . I did a cursory field inspection and found nothing obviously defective . I even put the same round's through my boy's S&W Mod. 15 just to rule out the ammo and the ammo worked fine in the 15 . So we went back to where I got it and told of the issue . They asked if I was happy with it other then that and I said yes and that I loved it I just wish it would work . So the gentleman asked me some qustions and said he wold take the grip's of and see what was up . He said that what some people would do was take the main spring out and heat it in an oven to lighten the trigger pull and the other thing they would do was file down the main spring screw . And just then he had the screw out and said see here that is just what they did . You could see where some one had done some filing . So he took it into the back room and found a new screw and put the gun back together . We were up frunt in the store talking to another guy that works there and the guy with my gun yell's up front you all might want to put your fingers in your ears . So we did and at that we heard 6 loud pop's . After the first 2 shots my boy and I pulled our fingers out and heard how loud it was and stuck our fingers back in . He came out with my gun and said that the filed down screw was it and thanked me for my time and business . After my boy and I got into my truck my boy shocked me with a question , " how does he know it work's " ? And I said that that was him shooting it in there . The boy look's at me all puzzled and say's " blank's " and I said no I think he has a bullet trap . What's a bullet trap ? And I said it traps bullets , I don't think he shot it into the ceiling . Well I got it home and cleaned it realy good . The frame shows some wear like being carried daily for years but it does not look like it has been fired much and it definitely is sporting a shiny new pristine barrel . And like I said it has real stag grip's . I'm going to have a friend try and help me get some photo's of it on here . It has Mod. 10 stamped on it and it has a pinned barrel and the S/N is C 4643XX and it has the CPD stamp on it and look's just like Viceunit's MP only with a 2" barrel .

sounds like they fixed your trouble.a range trip will tell you more. but you got a great gun the old model 10 is the best in my eyes.

Have you checked to see if the serial number stamped inside of the right grip matches the serial number of the revolver?
